Default 85 Trans Am running rich

I just picked up a 85 Trans Am 305 carb motor. Car sat in guys driveway for 4 years. Started car up and it's running super rich, actually burns your eyes if standing behind it. Ran or 5 minutes then ran out of gas ( gas gauge read way past full, another problem I have to look into). Would bad gas cause the car to run rich? Engine actually sounds pretty good and runs smooth. I'm hoping plugs/cap/rotor/wires will cure the problem. Any other things I should look at?

4 yr. old gas? I would definately put fresh fuel in it and see how it runs before you dive in and mess with it.

Put fresh fuel filters in it after you replace the fuel.

Float probably need replaced. Make sure choke not stuck on. If in fact it is rich. Burning eyes usually means an incomplete burn which could mean lean, or ignition system needs help

Choke closed on first start up as it should then opened up all the way as it warmed up.
