I've owned dozens of Pontiacs which were my daily drivers . . . which was my favorite? That's a tough one.
I suppose it was my Wilderness Green '72 GTO. Base trim hardtop car, bench-column green guts, black cordova. 400/400, air and AM radio and not much else. Bought it from the original owner (in 1978) @ 80,000 miles and boy - was it tired. He used it for daily transportation AND to tow his Century Arabian inboard ski boat. He always drove it like he stole it, and changed the oil when it got so low that the OP warning light came on. For all it had been through it still ran great, and once I put a posi diff on the OE 3.23 R&P it ran solid 15.0s at 92 in the 1/4. I eventually installed all of the Y99 suspension pieces, a WS6 steering gear and P255/60 radials on 15x7 Rally IIs and it drove and handled great, until (at 125K miles) I pulled out in front of a '70 Imperial in a driving rainstorm. I put it all back together with brand new GM parts but never drove it again - I sold it to a friend of mine who painted it white and drove it for several more years.

I had a `70 Executive back in high school. Gold with white top. 290hp 400. Very good car. Beat the hell out of that thing. No problems. Big and comfortable.

The '67 GTO convertible I bought 30 years ago. It was a daily driver until '93, and I put over 100,000 miles on it the first ten years I had it. Still has the original drivetrain which I overhauled in '88. Always a driver, the car has never been out of service.

My favorite was my 1973 LeMans Sport GT, 3spd stick. It only had 23000 miles on it when I bought it 1978. I sold it in 1982. Whyyyyyyyyyy????

In the late 80's, my sister had a 70 LeMans Sport. 400, Turbo on the column, bench seat. It had about 180,000 miles on it, still ran great, no problems. The body was pretty rusty is why we got rid of it.

I've only had two for Daily Drivers. The 69 LeMans convertible was pretty reliable and not bad gas mileage.

Mine was a '63 Cat, 2DHT, 389/stick, light blue. I traded in a '57 Chieftain. It was not a fast car, but was a clean, nice riding car.

I don't know if I can pick one, but it may actually be my current '74 Bonne. Completely stock, and she never let's me down. One fuel pump failure is all I can remember, and she continues to roll on daily...

My best daily driver was a 73 Formula 350.
I bought it with just over 100K miles on it around 1984. The car was rock solid and ran well, but the original paint had dulled pretty badly. I tried compounding and waxing, but it wouldn't hold a shine. I was interested in learning bodywork, so I signed up for bodywork courses at the local community college. I also bought my own air compressor. Over the next year, I stripped the car to bare metal and repainted it in it's original color. It was a fairly easy job, since it had no real body damage or rust. At the time, I was driving about 50 miles per day to work and back, so I put a lot of miles on it over the next few years. It developed a very bad rear main oil seal leak at about 190K. I was fully into the hobby by that time, and had picked up a very rusty 75 T/A 400 4-spd, whic became the donor car for my new engine. In addition to a new motor, I upgraded to a TH400 and a 3.08 limited slip rear end. The car looked pretty good and ran fairly well, but gas mileage went down a little. I continued to use it as a daily driver until the early 90s. The only real problem I had with the car was the a/c system. I put a new compressor on it right after I got it, then replaced it again around the late 80s. That last compressor only lasted about two years, with the problem was traced to a leaky evaporator coil. The car had around 280K miles on it by that time and the mileage was beginning to show. Around 1991 or so, I had picked up a low mileage 75 Formula with functioning a/c, which that became my primary driver. Due to the high mileage, the Formula was relegated to being a winter driver and backup car. I kept the 73 Formula a few more years, and by 1995 or so, it had over 300K miles on it. It still ran pretty good, but it was starting to get some condensation in the oil. The body was still very solid, with a few bubbles showing up in the rear quarters. One of my friends bought a very rusty 77 T/A with a 455 4-spd and wanted to buy my 73, so I sold it to him. My friend had the Formula a few months, and totaled the car. A Honda Del Sol ran a stop light and T-boned him in the driver's side door. I helped my buddy junk the Formula out, and ended up with some of the parts off of it. I still have a few parts off of the car, such as a rust-free front fender and the front valance panel and maybe the right side door. The 455 4-spd went into another car, and the rest was junked. The photo below was taken the day I sold it. Last edited by poncho-mike; 08-28-2013 at 09:52 PM. |
