Auto to 4 speed conversion brake pedal support
I'm converting a 1968 Pontiac LeMans from automatic to 4 speed. I've taken out the brake pedal to replace it with the pedal assembly. The corrugated support has room for the 7/16 inch bolt supporting the brake pedal, but is not big enough to handle the 5/8 inch clutch/brake pedal assembly. Reviewing the parts from the service manual it appears that the corrugated support is the same part for both the automatic and the 4 speed. Do I just widen the support holes by machining a bigger hole to accept the 5/8 inch pedal assembly??

there are supposed to be some bushings that go in there. service manual should have a blown up pic of this. I did the same auto to manual conversion with my 71.

there are bushings on the brake pedal portion, and this does fit where the old brake pedal was located, but the assembly has a solid 5/8 inch bolt (part of the clutch pedal) that has to pass through, picking up the brake pedal and ending with a fastener.

My Olds parts manual shows 7/16" bolt there also. can you send a pic of this 5/8" assy?

I bought this on e-bay thinking it would fit my A-body, 1968 LeMans. Please see the attachment, Classic Headquarters part number W-839 Clutch and Brake Pedal Assy.

Might be a Chevy unit. Ames shows the 7/16 bolt setups, I will look under the dash of my 71 and see what i got...

Do yourself a favor and find an old OEM set and refurb them. I tried the aftermarket pedal route on mine and decided that instead of re-inventing the wheel I'd go to mother GM.

Here is a 68 Chevelle and a 68 GTO set side by side
on the left Pontiac right Chevelle
here is an NOS clutch and brake pedal 67-68 GTO 69-72would have a pin on the upper pedal arm for the clutch nuetral safety switch... and a 68 Chevelle pedal assembly note the diff in the clutch rod bracket the pin verses bolt assembly the shape of the arm of the clutch pedal etc Scott even Olds's are diff too they have a Large thru the firewall rod end at the pedal I have a set of those also.. unique to olds .......cutlass....... buick ?? never seen or had one ........ I do have a used set for sale if you need ... Pontiac of course send me a pm if you have a need THIS IS JUST MY OPINION AND A OBSERVATION |
