On that note, I understand you used to be able to rebuild water pumps (please forgive my ignorance, I was born several decades too late to have lived through the musclecar period);
I have seen in POCI that there is a company offering to rebuild/upgrade pumps, but rarely read of people simply rebuilding them - are you getting the service advertised in POCI done, or did you find someone here who does primo OEM rebuilds?

I have to go digging through my own (probably paltry compared to yours) parts stash, but I think I located a correct water pump for my car, and have had this in the back of my mind...

On the water pump, OPH is doing it. I believe he does 3 or 4 batches a year or so, and the timing worked out well.

A couple new things to report on the Balck Car. Got the air cleaner decal from PB and it is proudly in place. These are great quality, thanks Pat. Also received the rear sway bar bushings and they look perfect. No one markets a correct rear bushing for WS6 suspension rear bars, but I saw here on the forum that Corvette bushings were an exact match. I found them at Eckler's Corvette listed as front sway bar bushings for 1968 on Corvettes. Here's a few pictures including one of the Eckler's receipt so you have a part number.

I'm curious to see how well that double lip seal for the compressor works. I sent mine out to get rebuilt, and the seal still leaks. I might have to try the double lip seal.

Would MPD be willing to do one for me?

Thanks,
Karl

I'm sure he would. We bought all the specialty tools, et cetera, however, these things are so damn heavy the cost of shipping might be prohibitive. The seal itself is $11.00.

Thanks, I just bought one. I've got an extra compressor sitting here, I might try and see what I can do. The one on the car I shipped out to a place and they completely rebuilt it, but the seal kept leaking. I sent it back and they said there were contaminants in the system. I had flushed the condenser and replaced everything else, so I don't know where they would have come from. So I flushed everything again while they were replacing the seal, and it still seems like it is leaking excessively.

Well, things are going kind of slow, but that's ok. Black Car is moving slow and I am not sure what other car Dave and I could disassemble if we finish all the Black Car parts well before the paint and body is done. Regardless, a little got done today - namely the A/C hoses, compressor fittings, and muffler. They look really good. I soaked the compressor fitting ( I'm sure it has a name, but I don't know it) in Evaporust and then cleaned it on the wire wheel and cleared it. The muffler got blasted and painted with Inline Tube Stainless Steel finish. The hoses are generic, but I used BrakeKleen to remove the markings. The muffler insulation is pipe insulation I bought from Zoro Tools that is dead nuts on, and much better than the crap piece I bought from The Parts Place.

The engine also has a new water pump that is the correct part number and pretty close in terms of the date code. Not perfect, but better with a April 19, 1971 date code for a Dec/Jan build car. I found it on eBay as an old NOS refurb unit, and OPH pulled it apart and installed new seals. He does great work.

Here's a few pictures.

Continuing with the AC theme, the dryer has now been media blasted and refinished. I used OER low gloss black paint, and then took the soft wire wheel to the machined surface and brass around the sight glass. In the top five of essential tools IMO opinion is my pedestal grinder with course and fine wire wheels.

Looks really good. What are you doing for the desiccant bag in the receiver/drier? With the ends open like that, it is absorbing moisture from the air. I always wondered if you can pull a vacuum on just the receiver/drier for a while and if that would removed the moisture from it.

By pulling a vacuum on A/C components/ system will remove the moisture.

I knew that, just always heard if the system has been open for any length of time, you have to replace receiver/drier. I just didn't know if it absorbed too much moisture was the reason behind that. I just never wanted to waste my R-12 with chancing an old one if I didn't know for sure.
