Does anyone know where the correct place for the ends of the trunk weatherstripping are to be "butted" together??? I got gigged on our's at Dayton. The restoration shop "butted" the ends together at the trunk latch on the bottom. I have seen them "butted: together at the top center also. But the last couple of pictures I've seen them "butted" at the bottom. Which place is correct???

My Arlington built car was built with the weatherstrip butted together at the
trunk latch as you described. I don't recall seeing an A-body done any other way.

The latch is where they butt together if you notice there is a indentation there for a reason WATER DRAINAGE I would butt mine there no matter what the concours or any other judge says takes a lot longer to rust when the water is not trapped just my opinion but 27 or 28 1969 GTO Cars never seen it another way

Guess the Concour's Judge didn't know what the hell he was talking about!!! As my friend and I have found several other things they gigged me for that they shouldn't of!!!

I don't know if Pontiacs were unique in that respect but any other original trunk w/strip Abody I have seen has had the joint offset from the bottom center. I've got two good examples within a few feet of me but they're not Pontiacs so maybe it was a division or plant choice.

Well I cant say he does not know what hes talking about but the 27 or 28 1969 lemans tempest and GTO cars I,ve had all had the joint at the latch that is what that little indentation in the tail pan was designed for water drainage I mean at a certain point it is COMMON SENSE is it not sounds like they were just wanting to find something wrong [A MISSION BY THE PONTIAC POLICE]

If the ends were butted at the top that would be a good place for a water leak.

every 69 GTO I have ever had with original WS had the joint at the latch (I still have two cars with original trunk weatherstrip)

I’d state the judge was wrong on this one. Maybe some were offset due to rushing but that is not how the documentation states to install.

68-70 Fisher Body manuals states to butt in lower center area.


The picture is of a 20K mile 69 Judge that has been in a heated garage its whole life and original down to the tires. Built June 69, Pontiac plant.

Get a better pic Brian, it looks to be off center. I have owned many original cars with original weatherstrip and have never seen one directly in the center, not to argue with the body manual but i have seen them close. and none exactly the same, but not on center and HOBI, not arguing with you but there was no indentation there in 68-69, that started in 70, and if you read the manual it seems there describing how to replace it not initial install. I'm not saying i know it all or am 100% correct but just going by what ive seen on original cars for 30 years. Besides they were glued together at the butt joint so that wouldnt let them drain anyhow. Just my .02
