Can anybody tell me if this NOS GM rope seal contains asbestos? Click this link to see all the pictures;
https://picasaweb.google.com/1143698...eat=directlink This is a NOS part I recently purchased from a GM dealership. Part # 9772826 Group .137. They had two style boxes of the same part number. I asked for the older style box hoping it’s the asbestos style. I want to install a GM seal with asbestos as they seal the best. I need confirmation that this is that seal. It does have some dark gray coating that gets on your hands easily and on the inside of its box. Any help will be greatly appreciated as want to fix my rear main crank seal’s oil leak once and for all in my 1968 Le Mans 350. BTW already tried the two piece BOP seal and got 200 miles to a quart, thus the return to rope seal. Below is application for this seal. Yes this is the part number for the original rope seal with asbestos.
The newer graphite seals dont smudge like that. |

What causes the smudge? Is that grease or the nasty stuff that causes the big "c".
And did you put a thin layer of silicone behind the BOP seal? Many people have had good luck doing that, although it is not written in the instructions. |
