Default Coil near plug mounting ideas thread

Figured it might be a good idea to give the EFI threads a boost and this topic has some information spread around here and there, but nothing really central.

It was always something that I scratched my head over for a long time, how to mount coils that don't look too out of place. I think I did OK for my install. The wiring took a bit of effort but got there in the end!

How do others mount their coils?

Kris it looks good. Similar thinking as factory...put coils as close as practical yet away from excess heat. Reasonable water protection there as well.

On a Pontiac the turned down exhaust helps further and you could probably mount coils on fender well or fire wall without much risk to the plug wires or excess heating of the coils. Imo short is sweet when it comes to wire runs... another plus for the Pontiac vs some Mopars or SBC's... Some Fords arent too nice for wire clearance either.

Kris that is a nice solution. It's compact, basically out of the way, puts them tighter together nicely, and adds symmetry to the look of the motor. Nicely done. Mark L

I built a couple of real simple coil racks for a guy running ls coils. They mounted to the engine mounts. A simple heat shields covered them up. Not my favorite location, but kept them semi hidden.

I am planning on mounting on top or along the side of the valve covers.

I don´t like it, they are in the way for removing the valvecover and it just looks ugly. Sorry, but thats my opinion. I would put them on the firewall or the inner fender.

I used the stock coil brackets.
If i had to do it over would I do it different, Yes.
Found a source for spacers. http://www.aluminumspacers.com/
I would use threaded spaces and mount them to the inner fender panel.

I started this thread hoping that other guys that have done similar conversions would post up real live examples of what has been done to help other guys who are undergoing similar conversions and to help give them ideas.

Fishin2Deep4U - got pics to share?

Ollie - Yeah i've liked what you've done especially with the distributor aspect of things.

I looked at mounting them on the inner fenders and firewall, to be honest when I dummied them up they looked butt ugly there as they really looked out of place. They needed to be hidden up underneath the dash inside the cabin if anything.

We should probably get an idea/example thread going for triggering pickups (crank and cams) too. We want the EFI section, so lets start getting some content up.

This is what I came up with for the cam sensor.
Using the lower half of an Accel duel point distributor.
Fabricated the cap to hold the pick up sensor.
Then on the MegaSquirt forums I saw this post.
http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewto...p?f=71&t=51205

I think everyone should post updates of their EFI project with a lot of photos.

No pics on the coil mounts. Just something I threw together for the guy.

Could you conceivably fire COP using the MSD LSx standalone carb box on a Pontiac?

Yes,

But the cheapest megasquirt would be easier. JMO

I really like how trimmed down the "distributor" is. Looks great. Behind my shaker it would all but disappear. Especially if it were painted.

Saw some sweet coil on plug two piece valve covers last week on an LS. Top half is vented and houses the coils.

Now that is clever! I like that a bunch! Thanks Rodney!

Hmmm... that may be very helpful for turbo placement options.

Don't think you can hide the turbos under the valve covers too! Lol

I like this. I seen something similar a while back for big block chevies. I thought about cutting an old set of M/T valve covers down to act as coil covers and mounts to fit over my Holley covers. Now I think I may have to revisit the idea!

I guess I better plan on hydroboost for some clearance.

Dave

One of the better features of our Pontiacs has been being able to run plug wires over our covers or next to them without much worry about frying them. The BB mopar SBC and even Ford and BBC are not quite as wire friendly .

Placing turbos or piping in the vicinity of spark wires isnt wire friendly.

But coil per cylinder with covers like this might just allow closer "over the covers" placement of turbos or piping that would otherwise be too risky without them.

And the covers look good!

Fishin' I hear you on booster clearance my old 68 'bird and big booster were not friendly for taller than stock covers... I went to manual brakes like my wifes 69 bird... they arent that much more effort and no difference in stopping power. I'm gettin close to mock up on my 90 'bird the booster is smaller than my 68 was and seems further outboard... It might not be an issue for taller covers. The HVAC might be another story but seein mine is crunched I can lose it for somethin like the vintage air hot rod stuff. (or fab somethin else)

I like your M/T VC coil cover idea...plenty of mount surface for coils and covers... Have a set of Holley covers polished n powder coated... but not real fond of free advertisin for Holley... Coils can hide the ad and maybe some early M/t's over the coils?

I have a smaller booster on the way. My original plan was to cut up the old M/T covers as they won't seal due to some neglect by the previous owner. I wanted to mount the coils in the top part of the "covers" to make them easy to remove. That way the good holley covers could be sold again at a later date.

This makes for clean wiring of the coils and I plan to use the factory grey connector. Again, ease of removal.

But it will have to wait for version 15.0 of the oil pump drive/ cam position sensor first.
