OK That's the GM version...Good to have...I have it but also use the generic ones as well for some other things (more general stuff)but my best reference guide is still these boards (PY and Classical Pontiac)...

I don`t thing there is many left today of the 2.379 produced.Likely more GTO:s out there.
And CustomS was one year only. The Engine std 6-cyl or a Sprint? A very nice engine and rocket science compared to Chevy.

IIRC, in 1969 there almost 7500 GTO verts produced, substantially more than the cited 2739 CustomS verts made.

As for buying sight unseen most of my cars over 30 yearswere aquired that way including 5 of 6 of my current ones. Living in the epicenter of the Canadian rust belt make that a given. Even today there are very few clean cars here but it's better than in the 80's since at least today there are an accumulation of imported cars.

I must say I never got burned, 20% were better than expected, 70% as expected and only 10% below expectations. But never did I feel burned.

What matters is body! (assuming you are not buying a big buck car where numbers match is a big deal). So long as the car doesn't turn out to be a rotted or bashed the rest is just time.

No, I figured most of that is for the more expensive cars that are to prove that it is what the seller says it is. Otherwise can't I tell it's history through the VIN? I think last time I checked i knew the city it was built in and it was a 69 tempest custom 6 cyl convertible. Otherwise will the PHS tell much more?

You'll get on top of these issues in short order.
One thing you need to count on though, this car will ALWAYS need a bit of petting. I started here at PY after realizing that if I was going to keep my GTO that I needed to be able to fix it. I neither wanted to be hauling it somewhere to get it fixed nor did I want to have to pay for it. Get to know your ride, you'll enjoy it more as you do.

It'll still PISS YOU OFF though.........

Well ,I visited a local Pontiacmeeting(110 cars).109 with V8 and people looked more at the 6 cyl car!(1966 Le Mans Sprint Conv).

PHS will tell you: Engine, options, build date, dealer name etc.Only Pontiac that have this services.I think your car never will be "expensive" for collectors but def more rare.IF your car was equipped with the Sprint Engine, then you have a very rare car.I don`t know the breakdown for this model but I`m sure the OHC guys have more info.

Found this for an example:

1968 Tempest Sprint Conv: 46 Manual 27 Automatics.
Time to get the PHS?

Seems like a good deal to me if paint and body are up to your expectations. Sometimes the front park brake cable is bad and doesn't pull the park brake pedal up high enough to turn the light out and will drag the brakes. There is a long spring on the end of the cable under the car that pulls the cable back to release. Also you might have the rear cables that go into the rear drums sticking not allowing release. Parts are easily located.

Kind of a PITA to replace, but not hard if you know the tricks to get the old ones out.

Try pulling the park brake pedal up with your hand, or left foot, while you pull the release. See if the light goes off then.

Other fixes are minor. Pontiacs leak oil, not nearly as bad as Studes though. A few drips on the floor is expected. No puddle, no problem, just check it regularly.

In the grand scheme of things, and that car being a convertible, I feel that those problems are minor. If you said you noticed the frame was rotted, and someone had filled it with newspaper, covered with bondo and painted with undercoating, I would be very concerned.

no, from what i see the body looks good, underneath and the frame etc. I just have to pace myself and not get too flustered at the amount of them. The paint does suck though....it's foggy.

There might be a way to rejuvenate the paint on your car. Can you be more specific than just "foggy"? Is the clear coat cloudy? Are there small air bubbles in the clear? (solvent popping). Is there "orange peel" present? Is it possible to post a picture or two? Have you tried to buff or polish it?

I think the main concern I am talking about is the fact there is no shine. Very dull, not as in lack of polish/wax, but more in the ways I think the paint is dirty. Not sure 100% if it's dirty clearcoat or dirty paint, but if I had to guess I think it is the paint that is dirty.

I'd get the mechanical problems fixed first so I could enjoy driving it, then worry about the finish.
If it makes you feel any better, here is just PART of what I found on my car when I got it home and started stripping paint. Talk about a few sleepless nights-
By the way, none of this showed at all before I started stripping it down.

While it's tempting, remind yourself that you don't have to fix everything at once. Start with the small, easy projects and work your way up. Focus on ironing out one aspect of the car at a time rather than playing whack a mole with 5 different problems.

All of the things you've mentioned sound reasonably minor and common for a 45 year old car. Just take your time and learn as you go. GTO Restoration Guide, Pontiac Service Manual, an old Chilton's guide, Jim Hand/Rocky Rotella's Pontiac V8 Book and this forum are all great resources.
