if by FS, you're referring to me, I'm not the younger gen and trying to help you out does not make one an idiot. You're going through a difficult time and working on your car is therapy -- we get it. Problem is; drinking brings out your dark side...

PX - 3.23:1, Posi-Traction. Probably from a '76 Firebird Trans Am.
Is there a conversion U-joint? Different driveshaft? |

I can't tell by the pictures. You have to measure the length and size of each shaft/cap. Someone may have just used a junkyard housing and transferred everything else. They also could have used the '76 driveshaft and have the conversion U-joint on the transmission yoke side.

unfortunately I am not familiar enough of what we are discussing...work would have to be done before 1985...why might a rear axle need to be replaced?..also when I get the muffler out of the way..should I pop the cover to see whats inside?...I would like to..is there a drain?..any info regarding this is appreciated...thank you

No drain. Loosen the bolts and pry cover away from housing with a catch pan underneath. Axle bearings may have been making noise, chipping a gear tooth or more or breaking the pinion flange are some reasons to pick up lower mileage rear from newer vehicle in a salvage/junkyard. Or, maybe it was purchased from a dealership (but would have easier to rebuild). Maybe a side accident bent the assembly.

so I used a bit of acetone to clean the silver overspray from the repaint..it took a bit of the blue but I would rather have it like this..really this car did not have a lot of blue overspray either under the frame or in the interior compartment..also a cable with a label sticker still on it near the transmission end..I feel like a detective that does not know what hes detecting..

![]() Partial VIN on your trans should be stamped on the drivers side just above the pan rail....you may have to unbolt the shift cable retainer to see it properly....take your glasses with you (and a wire brush) when you go under....

pulling myself together and making it a T/A weekend and getting somethings done...gonna take the rear glass to the shop and drop off the carpet to get dyed..had not planned on it but tonight I prepped the roof so I can get the headliner I just ordered from LEGENDARY,,deluxe perforated with visors (I feel as though I have seen this all before?)..I checked it out and there are the 2 front and rear headliner secure brackets..no way will I try this at home..I stopped in the shop where my seats were done..the owner is a mean dude..I stopped by to check on my seats before they were done..guy starts yelling at the worker (middle age guy}..why isn't it done..says seats will be done that day..I said please don't rush..anyway the worker calls me 3 hours later to pick up the seats...point is the guy did fantastic work in 3 hours!..so today I asked the guy(owner was out) to call me to set something on a sunday ...so after looking at the bow headliner with glue and stretching it..no way..if it comes out poorly I cannot deal with it..anyway I ordered a muffler since the gas tank is out as now is the time..the repop brackets were ordered too..so now I am using all my original exhaust pipes and can use my N.O.S. tips and set them in position..so some cool fun things I only used to think about doing..will pull the cover off the axle as I want to learn about that..not happy news but I even originally posted to 165TH as being optimistic..stay tuned regarding this axle situation...
