air cleaner/snorkel question
Hey, I have a 69 tempest with a 6.6 and I was wondering if I could get your information about the air cleaner and the snorkel.
First, why do they have the snorkel on it instead of the more common open setup? Can I switch to that, or just stick with the snorkel? I like the other look better and I would guess (in my less than professional opinion) that the open cleaner would get more air going in there. Also, I am doing an Amsoil order and I was looking at getting an Amsoil air cleaner. Anyway, there are two that are 13.875 inches wide, but one is 3.04 inches tall and the other is 4.056 inches tall. Will the taller one work, or is that too tall of a filter to fit? |

Without seeing it, I'm going to guess you are asking why the snorkel is "tapered", smaller at the inlet, instead of a more inuitive "straight" snorkel (or open element). The answer would be to control engine air induction noise. That the "WHAAAA" you get when you stomp the pedal. The induction noise radiates "out" from the carburetor or throttle body, so the tapered shape knocks some of that noise down. The control of induction noise and the ability to flow air are polar opposites; usually to have to compromise one in order to gain the other. K

As Keith said, it is a tapered snorkel for noise reduction. It also is a controlled opening that allows the factory to use a valve to control the temperature of the incoming air. Using exhaust heat on the heat riser instead of cold under hood air in the early mornings makes the car warm up faster.
That said, open element air cleaners were only used on 400 HO cars in 1967 from what I've seen and been told. Everything else had a snorkel. |

thanks for the info. I guess I just am not as keen on the look of it. Also, from what I see the snorkel is 3 inches tall, so that also answers my question of being able to use a 4 inch air cleaner in it
