Default 1968 GTO numbers help, please!

I bought my GTO after it had been restored. Today I received USB flash drive with pictures taken during the restoration. I have a couple of questions (that I just know you guys can answer!) about the numbers on some of the parts.

Here is a copy of the billing history showing an invoice date of 4/9/68:

First...
What am I looking at in this picture (part of the transmission?)? "B238"... 2/23/68?

Second...
The first picture below I believe is the date code of my transmission- "P8C25" (3/25/68)
The second picture shows "3925660" which according to this website, http://www.myss396.com/ChevelleInfo/...s/Muncies.html , is the main case casting number for 1968-1970.
The third picture shows "3846429" which, according to the same website, is the tail housing number for 1963-1965! Is that right?

Thanks for your help!
Pat

The B238 that you are looking at in the first picture looks like the casting date for your block. It's cast in to the block back by the distributor.
B238 Translates to 2/23/68. The date codes on both of the heads and on the intake manifold follow the same format.

Thanks JVM... the way the picture was taken, I really couldn't make out what I was looking at.

Here's another good site for Muncie:

http://www.5speeds.com/muncie2.htm

You are right on the SN/Date code as well as the Muncie trans type....

FO6P8C25 matches the Transmission Unit Number on your Billing History
8C25 probably is date incorporated.

Block should be WS on front
Above WS should be stamped - 481997 (Engine Unit Number) ..... then you are golden .

The dates on the manifold and heads should be pretty close to the date on the block, but need not be the same.
Mine is numbers matching with a block cast on 2/1/68. Both heads were cast on 1/18/68, and the intake on 1/17/68. The carb is dated 1/14/68.
The car itself was assembled the 4th week of February 68.

Also, distributor appears to have the double pull-off vacuum canister, which would make it original.

Thanks Baron... I was pretty sure the trans was original to the car, but it is confirmed now. The only thing that bothers me is the part of the transmission marked "3846429" which seems to be a 1963-1965 part from what I've found on the the various Muncie sites. Could they have still had that part left over and installed it in 1968?

The block is stamped "481973" not "481997" above the "WS", but it is also stamped with the last six digits of the VIN, so I think I'm ok.

I wouldn't worry about the engine unit # not matching what is stamped on the block. I have seen the PHS paperwork be a couple of digits off before. The main thing is that your partial VIN on the block matches the full VIN. Also the dealer code of 12 227 is in Missouri, not sure about who the dealer is? Scott
