Bottom of RA air cleaner showing vacuum routing. T on far side and loop out to the vac flap
Yes this is a air cleaner for a 400, but 400 uses 2 vacuum flaps , same as the 455 unit.

Bruce,

Thanks again. I think this is right....

Now what vacuum source is "correct" to connect to the other nipple on the air inlet switch? Is it the fitting in the manifold front, driver's side? That seems like a long run from the rear of the air cleaner. Also, what is the conventional wisdom between yellow stripe vacuum hose vs. white stripe? Did the factory use both?

i seem to recall using the intake source that you have pictured;
also i can't help but feel as though you've got those vacuum lines wrong...
the feed line should be up front...

but my air cleaner is not here, and i don't have immediate access to literature;

maybe you can try to find a pic of a dual heat riser 1970-1972 shaker - i believe they were routed exactly the same as the W66/RA air cleaners.

Here is a picture for you I dug up having been here before. This is '72. 1973 was different.
Make sure the thermo switch and vacuum flap units do not leak ( mighty vac time) before hooking to main vacuum, there is no check valve. It appears
that this was not hooked up after looking at the thread on this car, so leak check is always good idea. FB

The Thermac feed line off the intake nipple wasn't hooked up on the black car for that exact reason. I have never seen an original set of valves that didn't leak, even slightly so I was capped the intake nipple off. I like to keep the vacuum leaks to a minimum. The cars run better that way.

I have a question while we are on the subject: so how does the 73 set up feed? The air cleaner on my SD has the feed line just hanging there, too. I can't locate an outlet on the intake or carb that is not already hooked up to something.

Oh, and I almost forgot: when you repaint the air cleaner you may want to use some type of 3M clear protective film on the mating surface ring where the air scoop rubber boots mate up with the air cleaner. After only a couple minutes of running, those boots will damage the paint on the flanges. I actually used POR15 on those surfaces and it held up pretty well but regular paint just scuffs up too quickly.

1973 as I recall vacuum from air cleaner hooks to the choke "Loop" on intake, then other end of that Loop hooks to the hot air choke stove, which in turn has a Vacuum port to inside in in the carb. I have a diagram at home can post later. In this scenario there is a controlled vacuum "leak" to make it all work. This could be slightly different on type 2 emissions 1973 Birds.

Bruce - thanks for the help. I looked at that diagram numerous times yesterday and never noticed the vacuum line dropping from the front of the pan. I also didn't notice the breather tube that is shaped like the repop one. I wonder if the one that is on the Black Car was a much earlier replacement piece or what? Regarding the vacuum leak, I will likely not set it up on an operating basis, but I would like it to be plumbed properly and in operating condition. I'll leave one end of the line a little long and plug it internally. I also notice that the diagram references black with yellow vacuum line. I guess that means the white stripe line all the restoration vendors sell is incorrect?

Steve - great suggestion on the snorkles. I might try the new 3M spray on paint defender in those locations.

Any thoughts on the correct finish on the breather tube? Bare metal or black oxide?

I have to find were I found it before or have it written down, but I think I remember seeing Red stripped hoses were manifold vacuum, Yellow was ported, and White distributor. Green might have been EGR.

Maybe someone else has seen this and can chime in if I don't find it before then.

I believe that this diagram (like many others in GM service manuals) was actually the one made for an earlier year (in this case made for 1970), and simply carried forward to the "next applicable" model year service manual;
I for one have never seen this repop style breather tube on any period Formula or Trans Am - even though the service manuals (and MPC's) show it.

everything in this post appears correct to me. Vacuum to one side of the thermo valve, the other port supply's that vacuum to both snorkels when heated up.. I say it is exactly as you have it routed in these pictures.

you actually had it right the first time. Here's a pic of my original 455 HO RA air cleaner with the original, white-striped hoses. The short one that comes off the tee in the front is the one that goes down to connect to the vacuum source on the intake manifold (the fitting that you have circled in your engine pic).

If you plumb the vacuum lines like that, and like the black car was plumbed, one of the vacuum actuators will be closed at all times when the engine is running. These vacuum actuators are normally open, and close when vacuum is applied. That means that as soon as manifold vacuum is generated the actuator on the vacuum source side of the air inlet thermal vacuum sensor will close the flapper and as long as vacuum is present the flapper will remain closed and prevent fresh air from entering the engine. Also, the only way to get both vacuml actuators to work in unison is to have them both plumbed to the same side of the air inlet thermal vacuum sensor.

I need to do some more experimentation in the morning, but I think the air inlet sensor is normally open which lets the vacuum go through the "switch" so to speak thereby closing the flappers in both snorkles. Once the vehicle comes to operating temperature, the switch (air inlet sensor) closes thereby preventing the vacuum from passing through it and to the actuators. In the absence of vacuum, the flapper doors open and fresh air enters the combustion process.

This sounds good on paper and i think I am right.

So after coming down from my post turkey and sweet potato high, and getting a good nights sleep., I broke out the heat gun and vacuum pump this morning. I was correct that the air inlet thermal vacuum sensor is normally closed, but both nipples on the bottom of the sensor are on the closed side. Pull a vacuum on one nipple of the sensor and it moves through the sensor and creates a vacuum on the other nipple as well. Put heat on the sensor and the sensor opens up on the top side of the sensor (that part on the interior of the air cleaner) and releases the vacuum. Once the vacuum releases it lets the flapper doors open. Those who said that the correct plumbing was as pictured below were correct.
I think...

BTW - the vacuum actuators on this air cleaner work perfect and hold vacuum, but show no sign of having been replaced unless NJSteve did his usual fine job.

So once it opens up, and lets the vacuum out, it is a controlled vacuum leak... Got it now. Never checked mine, I always thought it allowed vacuum when cold and closed when warmed up stopping vacuum to the actuator.

Still trying to locate where I found the colored hose information.

yes, that is correct the way you have it now.
As an aside, the '71 and '72 T/A air cleaners have the vacuum lines routed the same way (with the 455 HO).

Mine is as blue71ta shows, and was routed plus checked per Brews 72 silver HO verified by Dan Jensen at TA Nats.

This will be a good tread all by itself.

You are correct. When it is cold (with the engine turned off), the doors are closed on the bottom side. When you start the engine, the vacuum causes them to open, which allows the pre-heated air to come in from the ducting. Once the engine is fully warmed up, the vacuum is cut off, thereby closing the flaps again and allowing only the cool, outside air to come in through the hood vents / rubber RA boots (on the top side).

The system is designed to aid in cold startup / engine warm-up. Most factory GM air cleaners use the same system, but would only have one vacuum pod on a single snorkel air cleaner...

I knew they closed upon startup to allow the heat to help warm up the engine, just never knew the sensor "leaked" vacuum to allow them to open back up. That just seems strange to have a vacuum leak like that right off the manifold, instead of a ported vacuum switch.
