Yes this is a air cleaner for a 400, but 400 uses 2 vacuum flaps , same as the 455 unit.

Thanks again. I think this is right.... Now what vacuum source is "correct" to connect to the other nipple on the air inlet switch? Is it the fitting in the manifold front, driver's side? That seems like a long run from the rear of the air cleaner. Also, what is the conventional wisdom between yellow stripe vacuum hose vs. white stripe? Did the factory use both? ![]() ![]()

i seem to recall using the intake source that you have pictured;
also i can't help but feel as though you've got those vacuum lines wrong... the feed line should be up front... but my air cleaner is not here, and i don't have immediate access to literature; maybe you can try to find a pic of a dual heat riser 1970-1972 shaker - i believe they were routed exactly the same as the W66/RA air cleaners.

Here is a picture for you I dug up having been here before. This is '72. 1973 was different.
Make sure the thermo switch and vacuum flap units do not leak ( mighty vac time) before hooking to main vacuum, there is no check valve. It appears that this was not hooked up after looking at the thread on this car, so leak check is always good idea. FB

The Thermac feed line off the intake nipple wasn't hooked up on the black car for that exact reason. I have never seen an original set of valves that didn't leak, even slightly so I was capped the intake nipple off. I like to keep the vacuum leaks to a minimum. The cars run better that way.
I have a question while we are on the subject: so how does the 73 set up feed? The air cleaner on my SD has the feed line just hanging there, too. I can't locate an outlet on the intake or carb that is not already hooked up to something. |

Oh, and I almost forgot: when you repaint the air cleaner you may want to use some type of 3M clear protective film on the mating surface ring where the air scoop rubber boots mate up with the air cleaner. After only a couple minutes of running, those boots will damage the paint on the flanges. I actually used POR15 on those surfaces and it held up pretty well but regular paint just scuffs up too quickly.

1973 as I recall vacuum from air cleaner hooks to the choke "Loop" on intake, then other end of that Loop hooks to the hot air choke stove, which in turn has a Vacuum port to inside in in the carb. I have a diagram at home can post later. In this scenario there is a controlled vacuum "leak" to make it all work. This could be slightly different on type 2 emissions 1973 Birds.

I have to find were I found it before or have it written down, but I think I remember seeing Red stripped hoses were manifold vacuum, Yellow was ported, and White distributor. Green might have been EGR.
Maybe someone else has seen this and can chime in if I don't find it before then.

you actually had it right the first time. Here's a pic of my original 455 HO RA air cleaner with the original, white-striped hoses. The short one that comes off the tee in the front is the one that goes down to connect to the vacuum source on the intake manifold (the fitting that you have circled in your engine pic). |

It sounds good on paper and I am completely wrong....
So after coming down from my post turkey and sweet potato high, and getting a good nights sleep., I broke out the heat gun and vacuum pump this morning. I was correct that the air inlet thermal vacuum sensor is normally closed, but both nipples on the bottom of the sensor are on the closed side. Pull a vacuum on one nipple of the sensor and it moves through the sensor and creates a vacuum on the other nipple as well. Put heat on the sensor and the sensor opens up on the top side of the sensor (that part on the interior of the air cleaner) and releases the vacuum. Once the vacuum releases it lets the flapper doors open. Those who said that the correct plumbing was as pictured below were correct. I think... BTW - the vacuum actuators on this air cleaner work perfect and hold vacuum, but show no sign of having been replaced unless NJSteve did his usual fine job.

yes, that is correct the way you have it now.
As an aside, the '71 and '72 T/A air cleaners have the vacuum lines routed the same way (with the 455 HO). |

Mine is as blue71ta shows, and was routed plus checked per Brews 72 silver HO verified by Dan Jensen at TA Nats.
This will be a good tread all by itself.
