I'm in two minds whether to leave my interior all original or sacrifice it by installing triple chrome VDO gauges under the dash. What do you guys think they look like, do they kill the look of the original interior? Unfortunately I don't have the rally gauge cluster and don't want to go to the trouble and expense of taking the dash apart so im in need of the oil, water and volt readings.

I like the look of having the triple chrome gauges. I have autogauge from Summit. Even with a console they look good if tastefully done. You can put them on a hinge and flip them up and back to hide during shows if desired.

Anyone remember the classicalpontiac site. In the restoration area they talk about mounting the gauges on hinges so they can be swung out of site. I would like to do this my self.

I would think you would need all electrical gauges vs mechanical in order to do that.

Andy, my own '65 had a trio of SW gauges mounted under the dash when I got the car in 1982. Because I had a rally cluster, they were redundant, but these gauge clusters were very popular back in the day. I removed mine about 4 years ago and re-connected the oil and water gauges in order to 'clean up' my interior. That said, an aftermarket gauge trio is a perfectly acceptable modification, 'period correct', and is easily 'undone' if you don't like it. The one or two small screw holes are out of sight under the dash, and can even be filled and repainted if you are a fanatic. (I left mine there, as the dash is original paint and I didn't want to change anything). I say go for it if you want.

I had Stewart Warner gauges until my old age. I took them off and installed the large face Autogage setup.

I ran SW Gages from "Day One" when I received the car from my uncle.

I also still have those gages but changed the plastic tubing to small diameter stainless tubing after having a oil leak on the Oil Pressure gage.

Eyes are not that great anymore but I can still read the large face gages fine so that is what I have now (and a oil pressure warning light with a 15 psi trigger. That has saved be when I had a oil filter o-ring gasket leak on me. It also sounds a audible alarm "Beep Beep Beep" in the car.

Yes, I like the look of the old gages under the dash on a 64-65 type vehicle.

I put Stewart Warner Green Line gauges in mine (just oil and temp). Went with the 2 5/8 inch size for easier reading.

Very happy and I think like many others here feel it's period correct.

Champ, your SW gauge looks a lot like the 40 year old SW stuff I removed from my '65. Definitely 'period correct' IMO.

Thanks for the feedback. The hinged idea got me thinking instead of hinges, setting up a slide type set up on 2 tracks.This way i can slide them back towards the firewall when not in use mostly out of site. I think that will work even with mechanical gauges.

Went to autometer on my 64, under dash gauges. But only used 2, oil pressure and temp, left the idiot light for charging system. Look good well to me anyhow.

Not a '65...this is my '68 but I decided to try to make mine integrate with the existing dash by painting the housing the interior color. You can get the housings that slant either right or left so you can get the left slant and invert it.

The gages that I have in my 64 tri power car are not SW but lookalikes. They were put in a 64 hard top new at the Pontiac garage . I bought the car from the original owners . I snagged them out of that car and they've been in the convertible ever since then well over 30 years now .
