I looked up the turn signal switch needed for my 76 GP in the 76-87 service parts catalog and came up with the Delco part No 1997984. I bought it and put it on the car. Now when I am trying to connect to the original connector plug, the connector doesn't fit - it is slightly wider than the female connector in the car.

The switch is for a car with cornering lights.

When looking up the switch 1997984 on eBay it is often listed as being for cars 1977 and up. Strangely I have also found some 1997984 listed as being for the years 69-76 (corvette).

Why doesn't the 1997984 connector fit my 76 connector? Are there two different versions of this switch/connector?

Also, the colors of the wires doesn't exactly match. There is an orange wire next to the brown at one end on the 1997984 I bought, but no pink wire as in the car's connector. Should the colors of the switch match the colors of the car's connector?

Mine source only goes back to'82 GP listing 1997988 as non cornering lamp switch as the 1997984 is with cornering lamps. How much of a problem is it to remove the wires and use your old connector? In a brief moment of insanity I threw away the old switch with connector, because it was broken. Never thought there would be any problem with the new connector. It looks very much the same but the dimension and spacing between individual terminals is slightly wider which makes the whole thing too big for the receiving connector. I didn't test the connection until I had also finished installing new cruise control lever+wiring and new dimmer switch+wiring. I thought I was finished and then the connector won't fit...

This is probably too late in this case but for what it's worth I always save the old parts until I am sure that anything new is installed and working. The only trouble I have ever had with my plan is on a big restoration project and/or over time the left over parts do pile up and sometimes it's a hassle just to find places to store them.

I agree with Peter save old parts. I have a habit at work of save customers old parts for weeks. Sometimes I spend more time looking for old parts I saved than it's worth. lol
