I gotta say that isn't a union 'thing'.

Every factory I know/worked at a majority did that.
And they were non-union.

Has this sort of thing ever happened with the other BIG 2...destroying large amounts of new cars??

We need that person to come forward now " hey, I know where there's a warehouse full of 1972 F bodies"...
"There's also a bunch of 455's with what looks like a provision for a dry sump oiling system and and they have round port heads stacked up on the corner"

I know where that place is - it's in Oklahoma!

My Echoes from Norwood just arrived in the mail from UPS. Unfortunately it will remain wrapped and under the Christmas tree until the 25th. Looks very interesting.

The reason for the crushing was due to the failure of the 72 cars to meet the 73 5-mph bumper and emissions regulations. We all know how the 72 inner fender bracing and rad supports are different than the 73 units.

All those polyethylene valances, broken well before their time...or at least a couple hours before their time.

The book was given a review in the latest HMM issue. What's your vote: thumbs up or down?

My WAG is thumbs up!

I realize there's a lot of bureaucracy involved, but they could have had someone come in and remove the good parts off of those cars before crushing them. How many of us would be willing to do it for parts?

Bureaucracy is what the book sights. Apparently union jobs would have been jeopardized is what the author first mention. However, later in the book it's mentioned some items were pulled off just before they hit the crusher.

Interesting on the flammability of the interior as being the cause of the 'crushing'?
I had always heard it was for the 5 MPH bumper standards coming in?
(and its reinforcements to the body)

Too bad Pontiac/GM wasn't still in racing, possibly they could have 'sold' the bodies as body in white to racers, just with no VIN?

They were still in racing, then, a little. Gary Moore got a firebird (not REAL sure if it was a 72, though.
Truman Fields got a 72 GTO, I know that for a fact, It sat in my buddies garage from 1980-2012, now in other hands....

I received my copy of "Echoes of Norwood" today. Interesting pictures. Should be a good read. I noticed on the picture of the cover, the rear of the white Firebird, then the sub frame behind it has a Chevrolet small block with a manual transmission. To be able to run a Pontiac and a Chevrolet one after the other shows how organized the production line was.

I haven't read the book (going to have to now), but why couldn't GM finish out those cars and still sell them as left over 1972 models? They met all the regulations for 1972, it wouldn't be any different than now when a dealer has a left over year old model on the lot. They have it until it sells. In fact, I bought my new '97 Bonneville that way. It was at least a model year old when I bought it and very close to being two model years old. I got a great deal because of that!

It's in there.

Basically the Fed Gov't had a set date that all cars had to have those set specs.
After that date, all vehicles not delivered had to satisfy them.

The 1100 or so were not 'delivered'.
They 'delivered' some to schools, etc.
(without VINs)

They purposely stuck a Firebird in between the Chevies.
The Firebird's were harder to 'build', so they staggered them for the line assemblers.

Fascinating book.

As long as everything stays in order it's no big deal.

Once something gets out of sequence all h3ll breaks loose!

yes they demolished along time ago. its now the home of an industrial park. Not paying wages that GM had there. Only thing left of the norwood plant is the parking garage. I think Cincinnati bell uses it for there employee parking since they have an office next to it
