It's not where you stand but where you sit. The right side is the passenger side. The left side is the drivers side. Unless of course you are in England and then it's a bit more confusing

To identify bank 1 you have to identify cylinder #1. Whatever cylinder is #1, that O2 on that side of the engine is bank 1. O2 1/1 would be the upstream 02 on bank 1.
Sometimes identifing cylinder #1 involves some legwork also. Treed by Blued- John Last edited by BB70; 01-27-2014 at 06:16 PM. Reason: treed |

Well I know # 1 cyl. is back at the fire wall but the parts store sells the part by right bank and left bank since it is front wheel drive me being behind the steering wheel still won't tell me which is right or left so how do I know which is right or left. Looking at the engine from the trans. side or looking at the engine from the front (the belt side)----BOB

Picture the engine as if it was a rear wheel drive setup. Passenger side is the right side.

Look at the engine from the trans side, radiator side is left and firewall is right. Bank 1 would be the bank with #1 cylinder so bank 2 would be left or rad side.

To identify the left-right side of ANY engine: Stand in front of it, transmission/flywheel to the back. The right bank is to your right and the left bank is to your left. All left-right engine identification has been done like that since the invention of an engine. And to this day, it’s still SAE sop.
The #1 cylinder on a Pontiac V8 is located on the left side of the car, but it’s still on the right bank of the engine. Does this help explain why the automotive industry has its own defaults to reference parts? |

"The cylinder block...has two banks of four cylinders each, cast 90° to each other. Left bank cylinders are numbered 1-3-5-7 from front to back and right bank cylinders are numbered 2-4-6-8." I guess Pontiac didn't get the memo?

I would say rad side is the left bank. if you turned that sideways engine around and facing forward like it's suppose to be. LOL!

Gentleman not to start a PISSING contest BUT someone here is right and someone is wrong I still don't have the answer to right or left PONTIAC1981, 72 LUXURY, LEMANS 64, & BB70 say it's from the rear of the engine and STS says it is from the front of the engine same type of answers from the mechanics from the two different dealers I sure wish the parts store would have said bank #1 or bank #2 I guess they are looking for the answer also. I don't want to put out $153.00 and have the wrong side. I would think that the 2 downstream sensors would be the same as would the 2 upstream sensors be the same.---BUT---I'm just not sure. Thanks,---BOB

I'd bet that a call to your Hyundai dealer's service dept. would solve this.

Bob, pull the old one out, part# should be on the old one. If there's not, measure the length of the wiring lead & look how the connector is layed out, that's usually the difference between upstream-downstream, L&R 02 sensors

Bank 1 contains cylinder 1
Left and right are as viewed from the drivers seat. Left and right of the engine are as viewed from behind the flywheel. Bank one on the side winder below is the firewall side. Band 2 is the radiator side. Let it be written, let it be done.

Typically, if you are talking about front wheel drive cars, you need to find the front of the engine. Not front as in front of car, but rather front of engine as far as pulley's, timing cover etc. That is usually the passenger side of most FWD cars. Once you identify the front of the engine, stand behind it and then you will have the right side on your right and the left on the left.

Iv`e never seen O2 sensors sold as right and left. Iv`e been in the auto repair business for 25 yrs. Bank 1 will be ANY sensor that "sees" cyl. 1. All 1`s are before the cat and 2`s after. Some v6`s & v8`s have only 3 sensors not 4. So, one would have bank 1 sensor 1, bank 2 sensor 1, and bank 1 sensor 2. The after sensor sees both sides BUT, it sees cyl. 1 so, it`s a bank 1 sensor. Lots of `95 and older vehicles are this way.
The sensor 2 sensors will not affect engine running. They are for the cat efficiency codes. |

Get a diagram of the exhaust system and see where that sensor is. Parts places should have these. Order that sensor. |

Well I checked with another dealer and they said that the engine is right or left by standing in the front of the engine and not from the transmission side------BOB
