Would guess you have the split fork end. Can't you just steel wool or lightly file it? That's what I would try.

Ditto. What exactly won't fit? I've had the shaft lock up before, but a WD40 soak will fix that....it is stainless, so it doesn't corrode. the fork at the base is steel, and the base is potmetal.

Rotate the mast so the fork drops down into it's slot, or something has gotten inside the base and needs to be removed.
You may have to open pass. door all the way and unscrew / remove base to clean?

The fork part of the mast fits into a reverse matching slot in the base. You have to make sure it's in the reverse slot so it will go all the way down. It should go all the way down with only a little effort. If it won't go down all the way try to rotate it 90 deg's at a time until it goes all the way down with just a bit of force. Once it goes all the way in the nut will go on then. If you can't get it ( the mast) to go all the way in you will have to remove the antenna to clean it out as there has to be something in it , i.e. dirt or derbies. Once it's cleaned out it should go right in with little effort.

It actually looks like part of each fork is broken off. There's usually a tapered portion on each side, maybe that's what's still in the housing portion.

If there is some of the mast parts still down in the base of the antenna you will need to get it out of there so you can get the mast to sit down in the base all the way. You are going to have to take the base off the car & get the pieces out of the base . You can soak it in some penerting fluid so you may be able to just tap on it so the pieces will come out so you can get it back together.

If it only goes 3/4 of the way down, Ill bet money this is whats wrong. The pic isnt really good enough to tell, but is does appear that the ends of the mast look different than they should be.
