I need to rebuild the power steering box (I assume since it has never been done in 40+ years) on my 68 GTO. Pretty straightfoward with the kit? Any pitfalls I should be aware of? Any special tools? ( I have a fairly well equipped shop).
I have a spare 68 Lemans power steering box here ...same ratio as the GTO? Any kits better than others? I see three different brands on Rock Auto. Thank you guys, JohnnyB |

It's my understanding that the big pitfall is that the shafts get rust
pits where the seals ride and that you will have leaks even with new seals unless the shaft is resurfaced which takes special equipment. I know that I have attempted to change the pitman seal on old gearboxes and have run into that problem with the sealing area of the shaft all pitted. Because of that issue I've always sent my gearboxes out to people who do that for a living. If new hard parts are available then you should be able to do it I would assume. But if the kit only has seals in it that isn't going to fix it. |

Nether box was leaking previous to removal, so hopefully they will go back together leak free. The GTO box sat on the frame exposed to the elements for a while, with no lines attached, but still full of oil, so I know there is some internal contamination. The Lemans box was a typical 70k mile take off, covered in grease and mung, but not much rust so I'm hoping that from between the two I can come up with all the good parts I need. Having the absolutely original box on the GTO is important to me.

all LeMans and 68 GTO are 17.5/1 but 69 GTO was quicker at 15/1

Do they sell individual parts as far as you know? Can't tell from their website if they actually sell steering gear components rather than just entire steering gears.

I think they will sell parts, best to call them for sure. I have had two gearboxes done with them, both turned out excellent.
