Default New 350 build. first time!

What's the best step by step book out there? Maybe local help? Just got everything back from machine shop for my block. Summit cam. New .60 over pistons and rods from Kre power. Have everything for block I need. Heads should be done soon.

Wow. Lotta 350 talk lately. Best book out there, "How To Rebuild Pontiac V8's" by Rocky Rotella. Give us more details about your build. Whats going in it, what heads? Many experts here and they'll want to know.

My heads were cracked. Have a set of 11 heads. Not exactly what I want to use but not easy finding affordable 62s. Basically stock with a mild cam. Nothing fancy. All new internals. Turned and polished crank

I had a 1970 350 with the #11 heads and it ran great. small valves and all. sold it because I didn't need it but shoulda kept it for backup.

Just one head was. It was a mix match set to begin with. I believe a 17 and a 47 if I remember right. Both specs were the same. Came off engine that was in my firebird when I acquired it

Also using a summit k2800 cam. What else do I need to order to run this cam. Stock pushrods? Different springs?

So far on my work bench I have
.60 over pistons with new rods
New cam.
New chain and gear
New oil pump
New fuel pump.
Turned crank
All freeze plugs
New lifters and two gasket sets.
What else do I need besides my heads?
Can I hot tank pushrods and valley pan and reuse?

I'm not terribly sure there's much difference between the 17's and 11's. i have a set of untouched 17's and they have 83.5 cc chambers
There's been so few people fool around w/ 350's that there's not as much common knowledge about 350's (and 350 parts)as there are 400's and 455's...

There's another 350 thread raging on here, 16's 62's 48's or 12's would make slightly over 9:1 compression.

Pontiac Larry will not steer you wrong...

I have 11's on an essentially stock 1970 350 in my car now. I freshened it up in 1992 as a temporary (the things STILL in my car, but runs, O.K.) engine...The advertised 8.8:1 compression ratio, I believe is bogus...I believe closer to 8:1...who knows. I have run as much as 44 degrees total timing, can't get the thing to think about pinging, and I advanced the cam 2 degrees when I installed it!

1968fbird, what's your location???

Sounds like you are building a keeper 350 engine. Get the heads you need for this engine, without compromising, and your 350 will run surprisingly well!!!

I'm in Riverside ca. This build started out as a stroker 383 but I'm just gonna go pretty stock with a cam and my holly with performer intake. Have a mallory unilte as well. Just need to get it back on the road so I can get her painted. My wife wants me to start on her 61 tempest. I will revisit bigger engine options a little later down the road. Just want to get back on the road so I have a good excuse to go to church on Sunday days
All my inner fenders .radiator support et should be out of powder coating this week

Thanks Trashcan. they 11's aren't terrible but bigger in chamber size comparable to the other low compression 350 heads (73-74 #46 and 6x-4) trying to keep in the mid to upper 70's for the cc chamber but if time is a issue maybe mill the 11's at least. Just remember a SBC 350 flat top is about 8.8-9:1 with a 76 cc smog head so there ya go.. not a big difference talking Indians trying to keep our 350 decent and close to 9:1 a little over or under is ok.

If you want to build the 11's and later put them on a 400 or custom 383 later they would be a decent choice and Ok for a 350 if it not the final combo but...

I wonder if anyone has measured a chamber on a stock 11 head???

I did a bunch of Jim Hand port work on my 11's (before I knew who Jim Hnad was...) My car runs fairly well w/ the 350, I'm plotting something larger, here soon...

11's on a 400, I agree!!!

1968fbird,
Glad to hear how you spend your Sundays!!! (I never miss)
There's lots of options in engine builds. I like to gather a "perfect storm" of parts, that will allow for a great running engine, something that will leave the bystanders scratching their heads, even if it's a 350, for now!!! Larry has done a lot of things to Pontiacs. A lot a absolute proven parts selections have proven be make great running engines, but there are other ways to get there, Larry's been there!!!

Valley pans and pushrods can be hot tanked, but make sure you check the pushrods for straightness (in a cordless drill) and blow anything that's in them, out. The hot tank will clean the valley pan, but you may need to go to a lot of trouble to get the leftover gunk out of it, after, it's been hat tanked. Remember to scrub every engine part w/ hot soapy water, and bathe everything in oil before assembling. If part of the engine is not clean enough to eat off of, it's NOT clean enough!!
Jeff

Larry, You coming to Tulsa May 3rd???

my 11's were 89cc. they were off a stock 1970 350 with 30,000 miles. I also have 1968 17's, they measured around 80cc. I have a pair of 1969 47's too, they measured at 85cc.

My impression was the 11 have 85 cc which would be good but too small valves

I just had my numbers matching 350 rebuilt in my 71 Formula. Engine was bored 40 over. I had the #94 heads shaved down 50 thousands to increase the compression. They're around 85cc's now. Arp studs added. Estimating my CR is around 8.7 to 1.

I also installed a Summit 2800 cam with new lifters and springs. Edelbrock intake with a 670 Holley.

I had the engine dynoed before putting it back in the car and it's creating 290hp. and 385 ft. lbs of torque. Very flat torque curve which makes it fun to drive. I'm not going to win many races against the other heavy hitters on this forum, but I'm happy with my numbers-matching car that will burn all the rubber I want.
