Got to work in the car a little this weekend. We were installing the trim to make sure everything fits right, well here is one piece that did not fit well. We tried three different ones and they all fit the same. Does not look so bad in this picture but it was.

Here is the finished product. Mike had to just do a little body work to make the fender fit the trim. Believe we are in to making the rear bumper fit the car next weekend.

Here are some pics of the assembly. I like to go over the piston skirts with a Scotch-Brite pad. This does 2 things:

1. Removes any burrs that may have been left behind from machining.

2. Leaves a fine cross hatch pattern on the skirt to help hold oil.

Plus it just looks better if nothing else.

Set ring gaps at .019" top, .022" second, and the oil rails were .024".

Here are some pics of the timing chain set. It is a Roll Master, and it fits nice and snug. You can see there is very little deflection when I push on the chain. Cam is degreed to 107° ICL, where Comp Cams recommends installing it. Found that the 2° incremental keyways in the crank gear, only changed the timing 1/2°. When installed straight up, it came out at 108.5° ICL. I had to use the +6° keyway to gain that 1 1/2° I was looking for. AT 107° ICL, the cam has .073" lifter rise at TDC. That equates to .120" theoretical valve lift at TDC with 1.65 rockers.

Here are some pics of the oil pump. Upon disassembly, I found some slight rust spots. The edges of the gear pockets have sharp edges and small burrs on them.

Here I cleaned everything, deburred the inside of the housing, Sanded and Scotch-Brite the edges. Scotch-Brite the gears, and sanded the cover plate flat on the granite slab. Also sanded the top and bottom of the housing on the granite slab to insure flatness, and also get the cover plate to gear clearance down some since it was just a tad excessive. It had .0025"-.003", and I took it down to .0015"-.002". There was a .0005" difference between the heights of the 2 gears. I removed the 5/8" check ball and installed a 9/16" ball in it's place. I also had to install a 1/16" thick washer behind the spring to get the pressure back to where it would have been. This 9/16" ball gives more room for debris to pass by without jamming the ball open. With the 5/8" ball in place, there is only about .014" clearance for debris to pass by, That's not much room, so the stock size ball tends to get stuck open at times and cause lack of oil pressure.

The oil pump mounting ears are not flat. How is the bolt supposed to clamp good if it's mount is not flat? Been seeing this a bit too much lately. Had to clamp it in the mill and cut it flat so the bolt would fit nice and flat. Can't believe Melling lets them go out like this. They didn't used to be like this. Makes me wonder if they are casting them in China now. Just saying, maybe.

Well, that's interesting....Are you planning to paint the bumper?

Yeah...now you're talking. Don't care much for the painted rear bumpers.
Don't the re-chrome places also straighten the bumper for you? That's why I was wondering if you were going to paint it since you guys straightened it yourselves.

The place I go to said to make it fit the car before any chrome, makes sence to me.

Balancer was out of balance by 3.7 grams. Balanced it down to .5 grams.

Flywheel was off 31.7 grams, now .7 grams. Flywheel was counter balanced before, neutral now.

Forgot to post this last week.
What are you doing for a pressure plate Greg? That should be balanced also.

That's funny about the flywheel, believe it was advertised as neutral. Paul, should I just get someone local to balance the pressure plate?

If there is someone you can trust, then yes. You will need the flywheel to do it. Then have them mark it's position on the flywheel.

If that thing was used as is without balancing, you would look like Gums Magoo in the first block or two after it shakes the teeth out of your head. 31 grams out, 6" off center, is equal to tons at 3-6000 rpm's!
