the (formerly) NOS, over-the-counter shaker that Craig is fixing for me is still in it's original black primer (never painted). Someone removed the solenoid bracket at some point in the past, so it's needs some minor surgery, but is otherwise untouched.

I have decided not to rock the Titanic and paint my shaker Lucerne blue...my 76 had a stripe and I used Lucerne...it is disturbingly off but I do not paint and getting a different paint and yada etc..I have an entire car to get painted and years before this car is done so the sooner my Lucerne blue shaker is sitting on top of my engine on my unfinished car I can keep dreaming..

Glenn,
isn't your car originally Lucy Blue? So it would have a white shaker on it. |

Has anyone removed original paint from a 70-72 white or ?blue shaker and found anything other than black primer?

[QUOTE=blue71ta;5142159]Glenn,

So it would have a white shaker on it.[/QUOTE..the car was originally Lucerne blue trim tag 26...car was repainted silver when I got it..their was no way too save any original paint such as door jams trunk etc...also why I opted for new sheetmetal, although the quarters needed replacing...obviously if I am painting the shaker blue I am changing the colour of my car..I have enough problems in my life I am not debating colour change |

I just had my transamstripes.net stripes installed today...they look great, thanks Greg! But the Lucerne Blue shaker clashes with the stripes a lot more than I expected, especially in the bright sun. The contrast with the pure deeper blue of the shaker makes the stripes seem more green....I may have to find something closer to the stripe color...or color match....I'll post some photos when I get home.

The shaker doesn't look as jarring in the photo…still seems to clash though….what to do?

I was actually thinking of asking Greg if he could make some blue stripes in a color that was closer to Lucerne Blue, just in case I ever restore a white car. But I didn't, since I don't even own a white car at the moment...

What paint did you use. I think some of the newer 2-stage urethane versions of Lucerne produce a deeper, darker color than the original lacquer. I used the DuPont Chromabase 5190 since I think it comes out a little truer to the original. It is still going to clash because the stripes to have a tint of green and Lucy doesn't. It is the way it was.

Guys.. just a thought, no proof this is correct..but I know PPG states that the body painted in Lucerne blue must have a G5 grey undercoat for correct color..since we know the shakers had black primer, could that produce the darker blue that we all think looks better?? Has anyone tried painting a shaker Lucerne blue but using a black primer?? If someone has time to make test sprays using a grey primer vs a black primer ...might just produce the darker blue?? Just a thought I had after thinking through why these have black primer.. I am probably wrong, but it is a thought...

in 1980 I had this same problem..on my 1976 that I added the blue stripe I took my spoiler with the stripe and had them colour match it...was too dark...then I recall looking in a paint chart and it listed the shaker colours...Cameo white and Lucerne blue for 70 to 72 Trans Ams...that was how I got my N.O.S shaker painted...I wish I had torn out that page and kept it...any how with todays colour matching I believe the shaker might look terrible if it actually matched the funky aqua sea green of the stripes...if my car was more completed, I might expend the energy and money to see if it was possible to actually have the shaker match the stripe...but I am most likely a few years a way from having my car painted so it does not matter..I actually am getting my air cleaner and shaker painted so it is one more item off the list and I do believe 100% that Lucerene blue was used to paint the shakers.as I have seen a original 71 with it...but I also believe other blues were used as RAMAIR 1972 T/A is not Lucerne blue...I bet 72 Engine colour would match the stripe better!!

I'd like to maintain a contrast in the colors of the shaker and stripe, for I do not think perfectly matched would look right. I'm just hoping to find a shade for the shaker that is more complementary to the stripe and also the interior.

My painter thinks the shaker looks worse outside because the sun brings out the metallic and purple undertones in the paint. To reduce this effect, he suggested going with a low gloss clear (unpolished) rather than high gloss. We'll try this first before changing the color.
