Default Sticky Steering Wheel?

Strange question,,,, I took the three spoke deluxe steering wheel out of my 71 judge and put a formula wheel in, I hung the wheel in the garage in a safe place. It keeps getting sticky like its bleeding some kind of oil. I clean it and a month later its the same way again. I almost feel stupid asking, but is there something in these wheels that they are known for this to happen? I clean it with gentle soap and dry it ( not that easy to make it not sticky ) and a month later its like you can almost wipe an oily residue off onto your finger. I just wonder if anyone else has noticed this weird problem?? It just happens on the hard black rubber rim ,not the spokes which are a softer rubber.

1beautifuldaughter:

I did a search with your exact title to make sure it was there before sending you on a goose chase. There was another PYer asking the same question and received numerous responses. Give it a try and what others have done. Good luck with your search. Rick.

1abagto, can you copy a link to that thread? My '69 F and G cars are doing it too ... it's like pine tar on a baseball bat!

The wheels are a petroleum material product and the "bleeding" is normal. I use acetone and simple green to clean them.

Thanks,, Interesting,, Not like its the biggest problem in my world but I was almost afraid to ask thinking I might get sarcastic replies. LOL
really amazing that something could bleed out of a product for over 40 years. Actually pretty freak'in scary. Thanks I'm glad I asked

"Does the car have any leaks?" "Just the steering wheel has a slow leak"

This is the reason why we saw so many "wrapped" wheels in the 70's and 80's. I bought a deluxe wheel that was so bad the seller thought it was black. It had the horn buttons I needed and it was cheap so I bought it and then stored it for a decade.

It's the same wheel I posted about back in 2012. I turned out to be a pristine DARK BLUE deluxe wheel in perfect working order. Put it on my car and it will stay.

Good tips. Mine is sticky on the GT-37. I will try cleaning it soon.

Had the same thing on my 73 Formula with a standard 3 spoke wheel. I took the aftermarket wrap off, and then realized why it was on there in the first place. Goo!

I have a 71 GS Stage One Vert that came without power steering, so when the car was new they took off the stock steering wheel and put a larger wheel on it to steer easier.

This green steering wheel has zero miles on it, never used, in the trunk when I bought the car, it does the same thing oozes, yes I clean with simple green stay away from solvents to harsh.

Sometimes dashes and console lid covers have that same sticky feeling.
