Default 12 bolt spool/ axels

Went racing yesterday and noticed when shifting from P to R or N to 1st....makes a loud bank in the rear, almost like a sloppy u-joint, but they are ok....pulled the rear apart today, backlash on the ring and pinion is good at .008, all the teeth on both gears are ok, and bearings as well. but I did notice there is a lot of slop where the axel fits into the splines of the spool....how much play should I have if any....can the splines in the spool and or axels wear out?....the rear has been together since 2002 with probably around 1000 passes on it.....all moser parts..33 splines..and street gears not pro gears....what do ya think?.....thanks
