A sad day indeed. Rocky, Don, Chris, Tom and everyone else who worked on and contributed to HPP did an excellent job and produced a first rate magazine. I have every issue including the original Thunder Ams. I've heard a lot of people bash HPP over the years and I have always been quick to defend it. I believe if you stacked it up against any other print magazine out there the quality of the publication spoke for itself. And, unfortunately for us Pontiac fans, it was the only game in town.
While I have known for some time that print media is a dying breed, I was hoping that HPP would hold on for quite a few more years. I like the feel of a real magazine in my hand when reading an article. Now, I'll have to sift through what is left in the print market and hope they publish some Pontiac stuff every now and then. RIP HPP I wish those who have lost jobs and income as a result of this consolidation the best.

The only magazines that seem to be making it...
Looks like most automotive magazines are living like the Queen Song "Another One Bites the Dust". However, I still see many of the junk magazines that seem to have articles that talk about that over-exposed family that rhymes with trashdarians. Sad that it has come down to it.
Would you believe I have been a High Performance Pontiac subscriber since 1997? I was barely a senior in high school, where I obtained the 1970 LeMans that once belonged to my Mother. It has been in the family since 1976 (two years before I was born). I was brought home in a baby carriage in that car. So I do have memories in it. Now the memories are bringing the car almost back from the dead when I inherited it. I even got a color for it (Atoll Blue, which is an original color for 1970, since I wasn't too fond of Polar White, and that it looked like a school-district car). Will be sad to see it go. As many members said, I had subscribed to a year (at least that only). All I hope is that it is another automotive magazine, and not something like Surfer Magazine, Rolling Stones, or Vogue. Those three have junk I don't give a rat's a** about at all. Reminds me of when Pontiac Enthuiast morphed into a bunch of magazine (let that one run out in the end). May do that with whatever magazine I'll end up getting. As you say, a possibility it could be online. Hopefully it can be. If not, then I will be thinning my magazine subscriptions. |

And here I thought that since they were the last Pontiac mag left, they had the corner of the market. Sorta felt like it would be around for a long time and had staying power. Guess that's not true.
I always liked HPP and I'll miss it. It's the only magazine I subscribe too. To all the contributors that post here, you guys did a great job. Funny, I've been pretty busy over the last few months and have about three issues that I haven't even opened yet. I better take my time reading the last of the breed. |

I subscribed to Pontiac Enthuists Magazine and let it expire as I read too many times about pontiac history and correct brake booster concours detailing. With all of the exciting engine builds, races, and racers just in this site, you would think there could be great articles to publish. In these mags I get bigger show car coverage and just a blip of race car coverage. I've never read one article on an All Pontiac or MR-1 engine build. How about an 800 HP pump gas build, or a great gas mileage/performance 301 build. Rare interviews of popular engine builders and their acomplishments (P Dude, Ace, Butler, Kauffman, ect) . It would also help these builders get their name out and thus more business for them. More business for them, more exciting article to publish. With all the talk of 1000 HP eheads, where are the magazine articles of some of the build and dyno results. How about the new billet Visner heads and Lil Jacks build? I could go on and on. Pontiac died because it ceased to be good and exciting, good bye. I love my old firebirds and the used-to-be's. Just try and think of one late model pontiac that anyone would spend 30-40,00.00 to restore in 20 years. Maybe a 98-2002 Trans Am? I think there are enough bold pontiac enthuists to to keep us alive and strong, the magazine articles just don't project that. They could learn something from Super Chevy and CarCraft.

Kind of the death of an old friend. They should at least allow them a good bye issue, but doubt it. With them since the old days and I only saved ones with 70-73 birds in and now wished I saved them all. Good Bye old friend.
On a people note, feel for the laid off. I just got layed off and a package for my 17 years and by my agreeing to the package I can't talk about the company. But in general, corporate Amerika is big, nasty, rough, bottom line, reactionary, and to me, not very visionary.

I have been cutting back anyway. Lately I have been flipping threw them then chucking them. With no more Pontiac how much can they write about. We write articles right here that we can all chime in on and be a part of. I do feel bad about all who have lost there job.

Enjoyed the run. Also have the Thunder-AMS. Still refer to articles. Thanks to all who contributed. Freaking socialists pigs running the big co's.I'll get in trouble for that one.

If Hot Rod would segement the magazine into makes with, say, the first section open to anything cool and the rest into makes I could see pulling in more readers. But to subscribe for the hope of a Pontiac article isn't something I'd do.
I picked up HR last year on one of those $10 trials, it's ok but I wouldn't renew it without a Pontiac specific section.

I've been a multiple mag subscriber for many, many years. I always watched as times were bad how the mags would lose pages. But as things got better the pages would increase again. This time the pages dropped and never recovered. In the past it was only the economy that bounced it around, but now the internet became a competitor that the mags just could not overcome. I've been watching and waiting for this to happen. I was also hoping that the HHP mag would have enough to continue but its exclusivity worked against it. And you're right, the coverage was becoming less and less read worthy. Of the publications mentioned I think I'll miss Popular Hot Rodding the most. The overall coverage of that magazine was closest to my wants.
I hate to say this but I guess it's time for a computer in the bathroom. Mark
