"As far as power is concerned, tail pipe length after the mufflers has no measurable effect on the power if a large change in cross section is present up stream (toward the motor) of the tail pipe. An open-type muffler, or a resonator box, provides this cross-sectional change. The tail pipe length exiting most glass pack installations is also of little consequence if a resonator box is used, but is of significant influence if not." http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/exhaust/0505phr-exh/ It won't be long and he will be making 10-second passes ![]() .

Back in the days when I used to street race all chevy guys were running 4.10', 4.56', & 4.88's, never really heard 3.08's on a street strip chevy. Except 1, My friend had a nice 1970 nova, inski roller 396, 3.08's, that thing will run 13. Flat at 106 on street tires he beat alot of well built cars.

I've got some 3" mandrel 45s I'm going to have welded to look like splitters and polish.
Might have to order some for future projects if they are going to close.

Last night discussion with an expert racing engine designer/builder/tuner almost got sideways for me when I defended the use of 1/4 mile performance evals for the use of evalating road-race engines.
The fella was completely correct that "every part and everything done to a 1/4 mile engine needs to be thrown away when applied to a road race engine. 8700 rpm, 5000 stall converters, gears, tires, chassis. Then i said:" well yea except i do an off-idle launch with highway gears to get the numbers."

I watched every single Hotshot Corvette owner fail in the Corvette World fail to Street Race & Beat the Hellcats.
All I talked about was Pontiac Musclecars Street Racing in the End. Also Said Fick You & Chevy Power. Going back to my Pontiacs. Real Thunder. |

I used to know a chebby guy. He had a 71 Chevelle 496 rectangular port iron heads, low rise single plane, Dominator, solid roller cam 11:1 CR. Ran 11.40's every outing at the track. But it wasn't immune to engine troubles. Broken valve train hardware, very rough idle, can't hang in traffic, overheating, he would never cruise long distances with his 4.11 gears, 4000 stall converter and tempermental combo. Yes it ran great ET's but was not well suited to street duty which is why he went LS eventually. A well built and well tuned Pontiac street machine will always be the best in my opinion and reliable to boot! Anyone of the other brand guys would have to see it to believe it and then they still would be skeptical to see a pump gas Pontiac running low 11's with 3.08 to 3.55 gears, HR cams, 3000 stall converters, Qjet or 4150 cam, etc. We all know there's a lot of tuning and know how to get there but that's not supposed to happen!

I gotta say Pontiac is unique in that it doesn't take "race parts" to go "fast". Show me a Ferd or Chebby guy going low 11's with 3 speed Autos, 3000 stall converters, 240ish duration and .600ish lift HR cams, and friggin 3.08 gears in 3800-4000 lbs street machines!

I agree with you tho on the new era now with Hellcats out there everywhere. This has changed the game a lot now that your typical a-hole can just put drag radials on it and terrorize most anything on the street. Believe me, they are dying to spank us "old dinosaurs" at our own game as the ricers |

The Street Performace Single Turbo builds I have worked on so far are 600-650 Hp Theoretical baseline. Mild cammed as many like. Nice street manners. Superb torque. Feels 10-second fast on the street. Likely 11.2-11.5 at track. Lots of one off fabbing typical. |

Yeah, I have to disagree that Pontiac's are the only brand that can 'do it', you guys must be in a different part of the country or something. Around here, there's everything, all have something fast.
Look at Buicks, 455s for starters, there's plenty of stout running GSs with the 3.08 type gear setups. Then there's the GNs, but we're talking about NA stuff for the moment, right? Olds 455s, have to keep in mind, they are 4.25 stroke from the factory, and although you have to spend a little more on the heads, they can be every bit as fast as Pontiacs. Fords, look at all the 460 combos out there, would be naïve to think they're not fast, and can't do it with highway gears, they have 557ci combos. Mopars? They have had way better heads than Pontiacs for YEARS, and stroker 440 kits that are 505 and 535 just like Pontiacs, bigger too, and Indy heads rock. My personal preference is BOPs, and I've been doing Pontiacs since the 70s. I like Pontiacs, and even if I'm slower, I'm basically going to 'do it' with a Pontiac. Not knocking the accomplishments, but need to keep it in perspective. .
