I have to add to this thread since i was there that day and am really happy with Ernies times and mine.
We have been both trying new things and its so rewarding when a small change works effectivley at the track.
I have been running a Quadrajet and am very happy with its street manners and at the track it performs great with trap speeds this year at 120+. I ran the E- Carbs and would never use one again period.
My best time has been 11:46 this season with a 342 rear and a RPM intake .
Hope i can meet TA man this friday for some more fun.

I actually broke one of my rules last time..I only change one part and test...but the season is ending soon...so two changes were made..The Wilson tapered spacer and the cowl air cleaner setup....
Friday looks like it will be cool at night if the track is hooking..we will see some pretty good times and mph from our cars...I'm still looking for 120mph!Torquewar beat me to it!One more part to test out ....

my car is running right behind tamans & i do have actual dyno numbers, ~520hp/580tq & no tuning on the dyno. 2nd time out it did 11.7 @ 118+mph with 3.23 gears & no carb/engine/suspension tuning at all. just box stock e-heads & a cast iron SD ported intake & cliff built q-jet. & this is with a very tight pro touring type suspension, no traction aids, a very soft 1100rpm launch & short shifts around 5000 ... & a pretty bad fuel starvation issue if i try to go any faster, most likely due to the mech pump. once i address the fuel issue this winter & maybe add a full set of drag shocks & some type of traction aid, it should easily get down around tamans 11.4... or faster with a little tuning.

most cars should be in the mid to upper 11's at these power levels, even the heavier cars around 4000. as taman says, the pontiacs create so much torque they dont need crazy low gears & 4500rpm stall converters to do decent times. as you want to go faster those things can help, especially with all out race cars in the low 10's & faster. but for a mostly street driven car on pump gas & power brakes etc, these times are very easy to do today. cliff is doing 11.3's in his sleep with probably upper 10's if he wanted, but hes worried about roll bar rules etc.

I think these combos run excellent regardless of the numerically low gear or not.

I do believe these combos would benefit immensely from a higher stall convertor.
Continental does offer a 4200 that is tight like the Jim Hand Special.

Thanks.thats pretty cool...Funny story about beer...when Torquewar and I were at St Thomas for the Pontiac Club day...my brother offered me a beer..I'm like well I don't like having a beer if I'm at the track..but what the hell I'm not running for a while again...so I'm half way through my beer..and Torquewar(Andy) gets all pumped hey man we got to do a run together...as I'm sipping my beer I'm like okay take advantage of me..so I chug my beer back fire the car up,we both get in the staging lanes together....I ended up cutting a .05 light and running my fastest et at that time of 11.44....I park the car..Andy is like what the hell man pretty excited how fast I ran.....and my brother says....see BEER makes you faster!

I've got real similar combo, but talking with continental they said min 3.42 gear otherwise would not have enough driveshaft speed to be locked up. Always slipping and making too much heat driving around town. Did you ever have trans temp issues? What trans cooler?

I've had 3.42 & 3.73 gears with 60 series tires in the past and seemed like just spinning motor and burning more gas. Thanks.

I do quite a bit of putting around town..really no issues.My fluid has never had a burnt smell or a funny colour.I run a 70272 Stacked plate design aluminum B & M tranny cooler too.I've had my convertor for 12 years...4 at the start with 308 gears,6 with 342 gears and now 2 in the new car with 3.08 gears.Replaced the tranny once due to driver error mainly!Ideally... I agree a 342 gear would be recommend as the lowest ratio...you can feel the convertor slip a little more with the 308's but still way better than any of the off the shelf convertors...on the highway at 60 mph it feels super tight and the car loves it.

I then need to secure the frt of my fuel line on the frame rail then I wanna run and see what it'll do.....should be interesting to see with the new fuel system...least I shouldn't run " out " of fuel ....lol
Took the car out the other day for a little As Andy says Happy Happy....lol

I run into the same issues, when the air is good and tracks are cool/cold the engine makes more power and there is less traction. So the car will slip some on the launch and worse short times, but still runs good MPH.

If you can bring it all together and hook on the days with better weather you will be rewarded with better runs.

It also really helps when possible to run with or follow the "race" cars instead of getting behind a bunch of street tire cars that are digging up the track and leaving oil and water on it.

The real cure is to mount up a good set of slicks for those days instead of DOT's......Cliff
