I'm checking on a 67 400 eng. and the seller states that it's a special J stamp engine . That's what he was told but there's nothing about any special 400 for 67 that I've seen yet . As far as eng #'s there's only a couple three #'s for 400's . Any #' that I missed ? Thanks for any info !!!

Looking through my book of engine codes, etc. :
the 2 letter stamping on the front of the block is the engine code. There are 3 codes in 1967 that contain the letter J. XJ is a 350 horse 400 from a big car. WJ is a 376 horse 428 from a big car. YJ is a 326-2bbl from a Firebird. Buyer beware ![]() Ron. |

Thanks for that info . Is there any thing out of the norm about the J other than ID ? I figure it's nothing more than a 67 400 engine . There was a nice story attached to it also but kinda long !!!!!

Not that I've heard of, but I'm just a Pontiac enthusiast, not an expert
![]() Best case scenario is that it's really a 428 and they don't know it. (in my opinion) |

The two letter code on the passenger side of the front of the block will tell you what it is. I also believe that 428 blocks actually had "428" cast into the underside of the block on the passenger side.

If the head casting number is 143 than it is a 400 As many of the big body cars in 67 got this 400 which came fitted with these 389/ 421 type heads.

If it has 670 heads, it could be a 400 or 428. Need to get the date code off of it by the distributor, and the code on the front of the block, as they re-used codes throughout the years.

If it is a 67 block the casting #s are. They are at the back by the distributor hard to see in car.
400= 9786133 casting # 428=9786135 326=9786339
