Unhappy 65 GTO Convertible Crash - Fatal

Anyone know anything about this car or the owner? Hoping they were not a member here. RIP.

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/...abrk/18931391/

I only found out because a co-worker's stepfather was the driver of the white pickup truck. (he has major injuries but is not life threatening)

From AZ Central: A fatal collision in Phoenix closed 19th Avenue at the Loop 101 Pima Freeway for several hours on Wednesday, police said.

A vehicle driven by a man believed to be in his 50s was exiting the Pima Freeway when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with another vehicle on 19th Avenue, said Sgt. Jonathan Howard, Phoenix police spokesman.

The driver in his 50s died at a hospital, Howard said, and the other driver was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.

The collision was still under investigation Wednesday afternoon, Howard said

May he RIP. Looks to be straight head on. Steering wheel crushed his chest; might have stood a chance in a 67 or newer model.

Sad and scary as hell at the same time. That could be any one of us.

RIP to the driver of the GTO.

From looking at the yellow lines, it appears that the GTO driver was on the wrong side of the road...but it's very difficult to judge these things from a photo. Cars rarely wind up in the positions they started from.

No skid marks or any type of marks from braking. Maybe the driver that died had a heart attack or passed out before impact?

I don't recognize the car and I haven't heard anything about the driver beyond what's been in the news.

I looked at obituaries but couldn't find any that matched the date of the accident. But, the driver of the GTO may not have been from Phoenix.

Some years back here on the south side of Atlanta only 5 or 6 miles past the Airport, a tractor trailer exited I-85 South doing about 70mph. He continued about 150 yards up the Exit ramp at the same speed, crossed 4 lanes and the grass median of one of the busiest roads in this area, entered into the parking lot of a gas station wiping out several pumps and into the convenience store and a Blimpies restaurant setting the entire shebang afire.
I believe 1 person in the restaurant was killed and the driver of the truck was killed. Somehow, miraculously, not a single car or any other people were struck. To this day, no one knows why this happened. Everyone assumed heart attack.

I didnt know about this till I saw it here. That accident was about a mile from my work. I checked several other news outlets & all of them have the exact same story & picture. No follow up either. I know a guy with a red 65. Have not been able to get ahold of him. Hpoe its not him. Last I knew his car was in the middle of a full restoration. I hear anything else, I will post it up.

Sad to hear about for sure. From time to time I think about the lack of safety in these old cars and appreciate the risk involved in driving them regularly.

It's amazing the level of damage to the GTO and the relatively minor damage to the Ranger- a vehicle not really known for it's own crashworthiness. Pictures like this reinforce the results of that '59 into '09 Impala crash test video that came out some years back.
