Hi all,
I started my '63 Tempest project a little over two years ago and had big plans to build a killer stroked (street) 400 with aluminum heads, roller cam, etc., but another baby and some other unexpected family circumstances have slowed my progress and made me less eager to drop the money on a rebuild with all of the go-fast goodies. Now, I'm looking for a running or easily-made-runnable complete or mostly-complete engine with some modicum of performance to move my project along while I get the parts and funds together for the big build. In keeping with my plans for the Tempest I'm partial to the 4'' stroke motors, but would consider alternatives if they fit the bill and the price is right. I might also consider just a good short block if the price is right. I'm not looking for a completely disassembled engine to put back together though. If you have something that you think might fit the description above, please email me ([email protected]) and let me know what you've got and what kind of price you're looking for. As far as my price range goes, I'm trying to be frugal. I'm willing to drive about 2 hours away. |

Do you still have the transaxle or have you modified the the car to use a regular trans and rear end? If you still have the transaxle you will need to stick with the original engine or modify the crank on your new engine. Another option is to put the 326 crank that is already drilled to accept the torquetube shaft into a 63 389 block as it will have the same dimensions as the 389 crank. I've already been down this road.

Thanks Chiefkey. No, the transaxle was long gone before I bought the car. When I bought it there was actually an 8.5'' rear welded in there so the car could be rolled around! I've sorted that out now.

I have a 69 xh 400 that is newly built - no miles. I have over $3400.00 into this motor- built by a local race engine guy to run on pump gas. Mild headwork and nice cam- should dyno at approx 425hp.
All internals and headwork is new. It is lubed for storage but dry, never been run. I have the break in oil that can go with it. I can fire it up and video break in, if desired. I have pulleys and brackets. I can get distributor and carb, if desired. I can crate and ship. Make me an offer. Thanks Mark Last edited by i4abuygto; 11-28-2014 at 12:43 PM. Reason: more text |

Thanks for the posts guys, and thanks to all for the PMs and emails. You all have posted and emailed me about some really nice stuff! Frankly, a little nicer than I had in mind!
I took a little gamble last night and picked up locally a "it ran great when it was pulled a couple of years ago" 1967 400 with TH400 for $500. The owner couldn't tell me anything else about it, other than it wasn't going to be used in the '67 Tempest project car. It turns over freely and has been sealed up with duct tape in a garage. At some point it got a red paint job, and the date code on the Edelbrock carb on top is 2006. Looks clean as a whistle under the valve cover. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is a runner. If not, it still has some decent parts to it. |
