on the night shift. Monday of this week. 31 years old, 2 kids & one on the way. He was killed instantly with loss of body parts.

Everybody,,, PLEASE PLEASE be extra carefull. You do thing so often & for so long that you get comfortable & complacent. Thats when something terrible can happen. Dont take things for granted. Be safe so you can go home every evening to your family.

That is just terrible. My kids are in that age group and I always find myself telling them to drive safely, etc. But just being at work can be much more risky than getting there for some.

Says that clothing was involved.
So was it the worker's lack of following safety rules or something that needs to be addressed?

I've seen so many industrial accidents where the worker takes something for granite and forgets the safety features usually in place to protect them.
(especially workers wearing wedding rings, watches, wallets with the chain etc)

It's especially sad if it could have been prevented easily.

When I was growing up (late 60's/early 70's) neck ties and long hair (pony tails) were problematic. I'm glad those days are behind us.

My Brother in Law got his hand mutilated making outside bead door moldings ( extruded) for automobiles. The machine had been modified by the previous operator who took off the hand guard. My BIL had never even seen the missing part.... He never did a thing, Osha came, and his hospital bill paid. No compensation, but thats the kind of guy he is...
Usually these things happen for a reason, and its normally human error. '

On aug 29th I took a short cut at work. I work at U S Steel. An 18" diameter pipe fell on a 2x4 that I had in my hands. The way it fell, it kicked the 2x4 up in to my jaw. It ended up breaking my jaw, and a few teeth, and sliced my jaw open. My jaw was wired shut for 6wks and am still seeing a dentist and a TMJ specialist.
It doesn't pay to take short cuts.

That is a shame. Another thing to mention to the young family men you know- pick up some term life to protect your family in case of such a trajic event- it's ridiculously inexpensive.

Terrible tragedy. Prayers for the family of the victim. We never know if today will be our last.

I worked security for a motion picture studio for several years and saw many accidents there. One of the worst was a sound stage incident involving a forklift vs man. It was a gruesome scene with internal organs on the floor and the victim bleeding out. He did not survive.

My understanding is, it was a cold night & he put on a hoodie & didnt tie up the hood strings. One got caught in the rotating machinery & it pulled him in. This is what I heard & have no direct knowledge. I wasnt on shift then. This machine grinds down very large dia. rebar & threads it. This rebar is usually around 3-4" dia & can be up to 40-50 feet long. Lots of rotating mass.

This outfit is on top of everything. Very safety minded. Everything is provided, gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, etc, etc. Safety meetings every couple of months. Very sad indeed. It hit us all hard. Its like family there. Great place to work.

Sad to hear. Just starting life really at that age.
A couple of guys got run over by a train at my job a few years ago. A month or so later, a father and son contractor got run over. All dead but one and he lost his foot. Ever since then, we have layer after layer after layer of regulatory procedure to follow before we can enter the reailway wayside...and that happens every day.
Cumbersome and inconvenient but necessary.

Yuck! I worked in the printing industry for 20 years and met many people each year that had their fingers snatched off by a printing press. Every once in a while we would hear of a guy pulled into a press or finishing piece of equipment and turned into goo. Prayers to the family.

Very sad news. Just the other day, I was involved in a "near miss" at work because of a young, know-it-all. I sent him an email explaining what happened after he went home. To my surprise, he gave me a face to face apology. Please be careful and think things through. At work AND at home.

I worked in a wood shop when I was 17. One old boy in the cabinet section was missing 2 fingers on each hand and none were consecutive!
