When people talk about GEAR RATIOS they are not talking about percentage drops between gears. Simple.
Yes I am an engineer and do know the difference. Apparently you do not. Tom V.

thats exactly what gear spacing is and what make the difference between close ratio and wide ratio gears, on the Muncie the only wider ratio is between 3rd and 4th, when you shift from 1st to 2nd on either trans, same road speed, the engine RPM will drop 75%,ex. 5000 in first will drop to 3750 in second maintaining the same road speed. The only bigger drop would be 3-4

You'll have a hard time getting enough rear gear ratio to make a close ratio Muncie out perform a wide ratio box. The 2.20 first gear in the close ratios are really set up for a road racing application. They do not perform well without a boat load of rear gear.
The 2.56 first gear in the wide box provides a much better balance and gets you out of the hole better without super steep gears. I'd stick with the wide ratio box. |

exactly what I said, the wide ratio is only 3-4. I figured that out when I was in high school, I used the wide ratio with 3.90s because once you got up to speed, the 3-4 drop was nothing. The close ratio trans is for road racing when you are constantly shifting in and out of 4th at speed. For drag racing you need all the starting line ratio you can get up to a point.
