I'll never buy another vinyl record, tho, I have fond memories of clicks and pops, don't have to remind myself.

You don't have to have any. I have an occasional bad pressing, but off the top of my head, I can think of only two. The rest are pop, tick and click free. I hear more tube rush than I do surface noise.

For a very cheap solution, this will do it.

Manufactures of records in the 70's and 80's used cheap recycled vinyl and the result is fine particles in your pressing which causes pops and clicks. Just another example of trying to increase profits at the expense of the consumer.

True, there were more problems in the late 70s and 80s. One that comes to mind is when Living Stereo became Dynagroove then Dynaflex.

Luckily, I worked part time in an audio / record store and would actively exchange when I got a bad pressing. I also had access to the German and Japanese pressings of much of the stuff I bought. I probably had less problems than most, other than the hassle of the original exchange.

The big problem I had on popular rock of that era is poor recordings with compressed dynamic range, strange soundstaging given that the entire band wasn't recorded in the same space at the same time, lousy bass, etc. And sure, this material can be remastered today using really silent vinyl, but it still isn't all that great. The better your playback system, the more you notice. Sad that such great music sounds so bad.

Many of the jazz labels were still pretty good, thinking of Concord and Blue Note.

However, late 60s is when we started seeing the specialty labels such as Sheffield, Chesky, Reference, etc., who did a great job from start to finish, and early MFSLs who did remasters did what they could with the original master tapes, but with great vinyl.

One great example is RCA LSO 6006, which is the 1959 Harry Bellafonte at Carnegie Hall. I picked it up at Half Price Books Sunday night for $3.00. Not music I especially care for, but one of the great recordings ever with the exception of the occasional sibilance on Bellefonte's voice. Few recordings are betters at transporting you back to that space, Carnegie Hall.

I bought this for the excellent record jacket. Record itself looked pretty good with smudges, fingerprints, light scuffing etc.., but nothing major and it was still in the original 59 sleeve.

Just went down and tried it using only a diskwasher to clean it, and yes it was plenty noisy, but no major clicks, pops or skipping .... lots of little clicks though. I did one thorough cleaning of side one with the Okki Nokki, figuring that probably got played the most, and got rid of 85-90% of the noise. Went back and cleaned it a 2nd time and it's virtually all gone. Background is black and the ambient soundstage of Carnegie comes clearly through.

Stopped into Rice Village Half Priced Books and did a Lookey Loo in the vinyl section, and had to laugh as they had several cheapo turntables that were flower power embossed and junk BUT had USB outputs...

Was a "Recorded in MONO" Disc 1 and "Recorded in Stereo" Disc 2 offering of an early Beach Boys or Beatles LP set which I passed on...about as silly as a $500 disc cleaner for a $10 LP IMO

Previous post of "Snap/Crackle/Pops" of "Rice Crispies" like vinyl reminded me of '80's paper thin pressings that often contained impurities such as paper which could be seen with the naked eye pressed into the grooves!

You can do really cheap turntables such as the above ... especially the above. Set up properly, they're are quite musical.

BUT if you're going to actually play records, and continue to buy them, there's no getting around the record cleaner.

Coca Cola promotional copy of The Shadow, Monster Songs in screaming stereo featuring Sounds of Man's Inhumanity to Man on side #2, Original uncut version of War of the Worlds, and some WC Fields for good measure. The free pop poster is long gone unfortunately.
