Looking at the 1972 Pontiac Shop Manual Wiring Diagram I see that the heater control lamp should be fed by a grey wire. This grey wire is linked to the radio indicator lamp.
If your radio light is OK I think you need to look at the ground for your heater lamp. Also I wish I could go to my salvage yard and find a 1972 to pull parts off of.
