Default 69 Muncie have a switch on the side cover?

Looking at a couple of Muncies iun storage both have the side cover switches one is a 69 by case and tail shaft #s the other a 70. I can not find what year they started with the switch to know if the 69 has a different side cover swapped on it.

Looking at Cangialosi's book he lists casting numbers 3952642 (long boss bolt-on with TCS switch on 3-4, 3952648 (short boss bolt-on with TCS switch on 3-4, and 335308 (long boss bolt-on with neutral safety switch and TCS switch).

What I cannot tell is the date of these covers. Hope this helps a little...

71 is when the TCS switch came into play, to cut spark advance in lower gears.

Weird I have a 69 and a 70 tranny with those side covers if 71 was when they started

The Muncie 4 speed side covers with the boss(es) for the TCS, there are at least two styles.
First style has one boss and TCS switch was used on '71 and '72 400 Pontiac application. Never ran across the one boss side cover on an original '70 application Muncie. Not sure what Olds or Buick was doing during '71-2 models. On a '71 455 HO, its original M22, the side cover will have the boss, but it is capped off with a special plug, no TCS switch.

The last style has a boss off the 3-4 and another angling down off the 1-2. This style Muncie side cover was used on '74 models, believe the '74 M20 I have in the racks is vin stamped from Corvette usage.

These just have the one angled down on the "front" lever area.

The 69 has a Pontiac stamping and correct 69 case and tail shaft #s and the 70 has a tag that goes to a BOP 70 and correct case and tailshaft castings for a 70.

Well one of my 70 GTO expert friends said CA 79 models then 71. If I can get the correct date on the 69 tranny it could be a late 69 put into a 70 model. I did get one from a Buick buddy so not sure if they used the switch any earlier.

Skip, will have to get in the racks, and get some pics of side covers. On '70 California emission GTO's have never ran across a TCS on the Muncie side cover. Believe differences on 70 CA GTO were limited to CA usage Q jet, and the '70 only style EEC setup.

I looked up my MPC and no mention of TCS for 70 cars California or otherwise.

How about Buick/Olds? I would think the chances of getting two trannies someone swapped 71 side covers on would be weird, but anything can happen.

So it is a March. There is silicon on between the midcase so the side cover may have been swapped then.
