No. I have used scrapers with and without a gasket on that side.
I made a aluminum bar that I bolt down on the scraper and let sit over night. That way the scraper won't move. I just use grey silicone Permatex between the block and scraper. Then a gasket or not to the pan.

No I did not. Not at that price! :-) WE are talking about the BOP one piece right? I was a very early adopter of that piece. I happened to be rebuilding when it was rather new on the market.. I considered the uneven nature of the install but it seemed very minimal... I did the tip test full of oil before installing.. not sure how definitive it was.. But in the end, 10,000 + miles of daily fun driving and it does not leak and I have good oiling as far as I can tell.
I chose to use a scraper because my 455 caps did not have mounting holes for a tray. it was easier then drilling tapping..
