Low gear set th350
I have seen a few references of using a 700r4 planetary gear in a th350 for a lower 1st gear. I have not been able to find the article. Anyone know more about this?
I know TCI sells one but its $$$. |

I will let you know how it works....my current transmission was starting to have some issues..so I have a Hughes th 350 coming with the low gear set....for my combo it should work great..I have 3.08 gearing which I won't give up for highway cruising..yet always searching to drop et at the track..while always keeping the car streetable..

It's not a straight-up swap from a 700r4 to the th350,in order to make these they disassemble the entire planetary gearset and swap out just the gears between the two, using the planetary carrier from the th350 and the gears from the 700r4.
So yeah one typically needs to buy the gearsets that have had that process done to them. It's not a shadetree sorta mod @ all. Also, the quality of said gearsets varies widely, with TCI typically being one of the lesser quality low gearsets that are available. HTH Bret P. |

I assume that it's mostly the class cars who run these low gear sets. I think I read that Brent Flynn is running one of these TH350's in his '68 Bird, because the TH200 that most of the quick guys run are so expensive.
You may be able to get some more info on these from Stock racer Todd Hoven. He goes by Todd 1035. http://www.atiracing.com/products/gears/lowgears.htm http://www.summitracing.com/parts/at...DiUaAnee8P8HAQ http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hu...-ugaAivS8P8HAQ http://www.bteracing.com/products/BTE347500 http://www.frcracingparts.com/cart.php?m=view http://classracer.com/classforum/showthread.php?t=30199 http://www.mikestransmission.com/cat...e350parts.html http://paceperformance.com/i-5137228...se-patter.html Last edited by ponyakr; 08-19-2015 at 09:51 AM. |

Well looking at the prices this doesn't look like a mod I'm interested in anymore. I thought maybe the 700r4 planetary swap would be a good inexpensive mode to get a 2:56 cruiser out the hole a bit faster. Something to give it more fun factor leaving the stoplight with a 3.06:1.
I never could find the article that was in some 4X4 magazine but from what little I read on people that used the TCI it didn't last very long in high HP situation and they actually went slower in the 1/4 mile compared to the stock 2.52 1st gear. |

"...Something to give it more fun factor leaving the stoplight..."
Maybe the correct stall converter would give you that fun factor you want. I've read that the Continental brand gives the best compromise between flash stall and less slippage at cruise rpm. But they cost more than the 2.75 gear set. But, there are much cheaper units that will provide plenty of launch stall. They will just have more slippage at cruise, than the Continental, and will use a little more gas. At least that's what I've read on this site, from those who know. |
