Water pump hub question
Hi, I have a 400ci and I think the water pump is about to give up the ghost. There is a lot of movement at the fan, so much that the fan hits the power steering pump bolt causing a pinging noise (this scared the crap out of me, thinking it was the motor). Anyway I called about a new water pump and there are two hub sizes but they only have the 4 15/32 in stock and not the 3.96 or whatever the measurement is. Can anyone explain how I can figure out which I need?

sounds like you almost caught it in time b4 to much damage.. measure from the gasket at the timing cover out to the front of the pulley .. it will be 4" or 4.5" ruffly as mentioned... or supply a water pump pulley number to us ... that will tell also as they change also probably the 4.5 its wayyyy more common ... It is hard to get an exact measurement because of the fan in the way but eyeballing it with a tape measure it looks like it is 4.75-5 inches so I guess it is safe to assume that the 4.5 is the one

hmmmmmmmm
I am not familiar with that number on the pulley ..
I would say yes........ on your measurement ..... 5" ?? probaly not be aware and do a little research on the better pumps to use ... and how to set the plate up properly behind the pump... are you sure its the pump ?? do you have a staionary fan or a clutch style ?? when you move the fan the pulley moves also ?? often the cluches go out and its not the pump thats loose ... No I am not 100% sure it is the water pump. When I figured out it was the fan smacking the power steering bolt, I automatically went and tightened the 4 pulley bolts and 4 fan bolts but that didn't make a difference unfortunately.
Not sure what you mean by stationary or clutch fan to tell you the honest truth. Yes, when I move the fan towards the front of the car, then back, the pulley moves as well. It is not the fan or pulley lose for sure |

I got a new water pump and went to take the fan off and the clutch is in the way. Is there a way to take this baby off or do I need a special tool?

take the clutch off the water pump .... 1/2 " 6 point box end wrench ...
not the clutch off the fan ... did you wiggle the fan b4 loosening thing s up to make sure its the pump and not the clutch thats loose ?? Scott |

I got it done after I passed the out or province inspection and got it registered. What a great day! No leaks and not a lot of hick ups. Scratching all that gasket off sucks but otherwise it went pretty seamless

The next time you have to replace the water pump the best way to clean off the gasket is to use a wire wheel or a wire brush on the end of a drill motor. Scrape off as much as you can that will come off easy & then use the wire wheel. It will get it clean & will also shine up the metal so the new gasket has a great smooth surface to mount to.

If past maintenance of other parts of this car are any indication, then it was done long ago. Looks like the antifreeze sort of ate through some of the metal in places. |
