Hey Guys,

Question regarding outside mirrors on the 73... Did all GTO options ship with the "sport mirror"?? My car has a set of basic chrome mirrors (see pic), but was not sure if they were factory? The chrome is pitting, so they have been on there for some time. Just not sure if they have been on there for 45 years...

The D35 option (body colored mirrors w/LH remote control) was available at an extra cost.

thx. Looking at the build sheet, the sport mirrors were not checked.

I was thinking of "upgrading" to the Sport Mirrors. Got a driver side mirror from Rex, but still need passenger side.

Does anyone know if the 72 GTO had the same mounting surface as the 73?

Lee as I had mentioned in one of my posts to you about the mirrors they mirrors are all the same it's the plastic mount below the mirror is what changes the angle of the mirror to make it fit on your door. So if you find a right side bullet mirror all you need it the mount under the base of the mirror to make it fit your car. I still have a few of them to.

Lee '72 mirrors are not the same! The mirror head is a little different size and the glass is a different size and the use a screw to hold them to the mounting bracket. The '73 and newer have to studs that come out of the bottom of the mirror base to bolt them on. They will work, but not the same. I have had about fifty of these at one time and sold several sets and changed out the glass that's how I know they are different. If you need a passenger side mirror I will look and see what I have left?

The perches are different on some of the body colored sport mirrors. Have had every style, locals on several instances even gave me a few '75-77 GrandPrixs just to get Code Enforcement off their butts. Everything, but their tilts, dash asms, and turbo 400 kicks down switches took quite a while to sell.

Speaking of sport mirrors, have been boxing and palletizing getting ready for the "endless" move. Last week came across a whim type deal I started in the early '80's. Had taken a remote body colored passenger mirror off a '77 or '78 Bonnevile at the local late model yard. Just temember th mirror surface was broken and it was cheap. Took the mirror backing piece apart and cut a rectangle in the center. The goal was transfer the black grid into a RH Firebird mirror and route the cables under the glove box and into a spot that looked stock. Problem was there were no hobbyist avail plastic welders, and my attempts at epoxying the black mirror backing pieces together failed.

51.4% of 1973 LeMans came with the D35 option, so it was fairly popular.

Would someone mind posting a picture of where the mirror control knob mounts on the door panel? I need to pickup the bezel, but want to be sure I am mounting everything in the correct spot...

Here's my door panel. The lower right side of the bezel measures 5.5" from the front of the door panel, and the top side of the bezel is 1-1/16" from the top of the stainless bead on the door panel.

Lee not 100% sure but there may be a cut out design on the metal backer on the door panel for you when you remover the door panel to cut it out. A lot of the spacing for items & options on our cars are already there from the factory so when there coming down the line it makes it much easier to know where things go. I know that it's that way on the plastic panels & the dash panels.

I also found out the 72 and 73 mirrors are different . Its been awhile since I did my mirrors one was cracked I got a replacement mirror from OPG and it did not fit had to get a old 73 mirror and replace the mirror itself
