Cross-member
I'm going through a lot of consolidating and cleaning up, and I have a question about 1962s.
Many years ago, I picked up two 62 GP 389 tropy motor 4-spd cars. Both were pretty rough and got parted out. I saved the cross-members because somebody told me they were unique to the 389 trophy motor cars. I compared the cross-members to a 389 2-barrel that came with the GPs, and the GP crossmembers had two humps, I believe the standard cross-members didn't have the humps. Are these worth saving to sale, or are they just some more scrap metal? Mike |

My '62 Bonneville has no humps.

Parts book lists for Cross Member - Rear Engine Support 62-64 P/8 9774449.
Only one listed. None listed separate for Trophy, 425A, or Super Duty. |

From the 25 '62s I have owned (none of which were 425A or SD cars, by the way), they ALL had the same cross member, regardless of body style OR transmission.
I would hazard a guess that '61-'62 (and possibly thru '64, don't know) are the same. To describe it: they were a tubular affair, flattened on the ends and have a slight arc to them (viewed from overhead, looking down / as installed on the frame). Is there value? Sure, if they are not bent, cut or rusty. I would pay $50 for one. ...A guy who NEEDS one to replace his which has rusted off ends may pay a couple hunnert. |

My '61 is a 425A car and the crossmember doesn't have any humps in it.

You are right 8LUG - my bad. Eye must have slipped a line. But even in my 1966 book there is still only one listing for 62-64 P/8.

This is a photo I took of one of the driveshafts. There were three cars and a bunch of parts. I'm pretty sure the cross-member that came out of the base motor automatic Catalina was fairly flat, but the two GPs with 4-spd and trophy motors had these cross-members.
I'm not thinking this is a gold nugget. I'm just trying to determine if this is worth saving to take to POCI or Norwalk, or is it scrap. |

P.M., rotate that cross member 1/4 turn and take another pic...because at that view, that is not a production-'62 part.
(Maybe TomS or Ken C can comment on this (whether it is S.D.)?) |

Rotate clockwise or counterclockwise, or does it make a difference?
It's possible it could be early SD stuff. When I bought the two 62 4-spd trophy motor GPs and the 62 Catalina, I also got a NOS SD389 block, NOS SD421 rods, and NOS SD flywheel, and some sort of aftermarket bellhousing in the package. This was close to 30 years ago, and these cross-members have been sitting in storage since. It's also possible they are not off the 62 GPs, they were just in the package. I tagged them when I got the stuff so I could remember what they fit, but I never checked. |

The rotation clockwise, as in, toward the camera. I am interested to see what the D/S looks like as viewed from overhead, when installed.
Thanks! |
