I can't remember if Steve had the build sheet for the car. If you have it, it will show the pulley codes in box 33 for the crank and fan.
Well, I found this old thread from 2006 that you actually originated where OPH indicated that this pulley differed based on auto or manual. Here's the link and copy of OPH's post. Also, there is not a build sheet.

485397 is the odd 5 3/4" diam w/p pulley, used on auto a/c 455HO Bird applications.
481040 is the common 6 5/8" w/p pulley, used on 4 spd a/c 455HO applications.
481038 is the common '71+ a/c appl crank pulley.

May have a few more 485397's.
Ship out a few 037, 038, 039 & 040 pulleys each month."

Then there is this from the 1973 Master Parts Catalogue. What is the "HT" that is listed? Also, what is meant in the 1971 listing where it shows the pulley changing "First Jobs" and "After Jobs"?

Interesting. I believe the "HT" means heated rear glass (which gives you the 80A alt & idler pulley) The way I am reading it is the 485397 would be correct for the Black car. (455HO with a/c and HT)

In other words, ALL 72 455HO Air Conditioned cars use the 485397. Including automatics and manuals. And if you have a non-455HO car (350, 400 engines) but you ordererd HT (heated rear glass)-you would get the smaller 485397.

The 481040 pulley would be for all other cars (350 & 400's) with A/C.

I'm looking at 72's specifically. Am I interpreting this correctly?

I thought HT was Hydramatic Transmission meaning automatic.

Any time you had both A/C and the heated rear window defroster, the 80 amp setup was mandatory.

I have also heard from several people over the years that cars destined for delivery in NY state were required to have that rear window defroster as a mandatory option. (BTW, my Gramma's car was sold new in Yonkers NY and has the A/C and rear window defroster with the 80 amp alt).

I agree with Mike (HFR) on the HT.

AC and PW can get you the 80 amp set up as well. Also all 3 ( AC PW and the Rear defrost grid) will get you the big alternator.

HT is the rear glass heated ( there is only one ac upper pulley for this car, auto, or standard shift) # 486397 is for an auto or standard
Jobs= Jobbers , and parts shows there was a revision ( assy manual rev sheet), and a parts pick order change ( different part, and possibly number, and possible manufacturer, in the engine sub assembly line. ( looking at the '71 info)
Bottom line, the 72HO 455 with the 80 amp uses a small pulley similar to the 1970 400 AC pulley size. I could guess this is to keep the heat down more when the Lead was coming out of the fuel.. ( IMHO)

Now that's an interesting thought that may explain a few things. Smaller pulley equals faster belt speed....The one common complaint about cars with the 80amp idler pulley is the issue of belt squeal. I wonder if this squeal might be more a function of belt speed instead of the idler pulley? I think I might try the 481040 pulley just to see what happens. The black car has always run cool, so I doubt the change in belt speed will have a material effect on engine temps.

I believe That will put the adjuster on the Idler at its tightest setting, with same belt.. The 73 Water pump pulley is more common and used for many years after. With a 160 or 170 T stat , I would assume it will be fine

The alternator is dissassembled for rebuilding and cleanup. I've got a growing box of parts to be sent off for plating and would appreciate knowing if the colors on the alternator fan and pulley pictured below correct?

Bob, I've seen the 80 amp with an unfinished fan blade and black painted. The pulley was silver cad plated. There is an original owner engine shot in my old thread. It's the photo with the 455HO sticker on the air cleaner. I'll repost it here, later today.

Do them both in silver cad, but you won't find a player that will do that. So go with zinc zbd clear.

Norwoord - Thanks. Aero Propeller in Broomfield, Colorado does gold and silver cad. I'll send them out there with a lot of other stuff.

Steve - Thanks for the picture.

Default Lines, lines and more lines....

Well, all the lines are off the Black Car along with just about everything else. I do have a favor to ask of a PY member though. I will need to repaint the yellow, orange and green line retainers, but I hate to buy three cans of spray paint just for three clips. I will if necessary, but I hope that maybe I can bead blast these clips and send them to someone that has already bit the bullet so to speak, and has this paint on their shelf. If someone can help me out I would be very appreciative. Send me a PM or text to 304.859.7509.

Thanks,

Bob

Nah, that won't happen. I'll still drive it and Dave's already been promised the first burnout.

This baby is just about stripped. A few small and random pieces and parts remain, but it's pretty much down to a rolling shell. Another day will more than knock it in the head. Everything looks pretty clean really. A very random mix of fasteners, and Gorilla tape, but other than that it looks good. I'm starting to bead blast some small parts for Powdercoat Eddie, and there's the inner fenders....MPD will probably go ahead and haul stuff down for powdercoating in piecemeal lots. It's kind of scary blowing up a perfectly good car, and you worry about figuring out how to put all the parts back together, but it is also exciting.

I love this first picture. Make a cool print. Iphone rules....

Clips, I have my lines off my Formula now and after I get them soda blasted Ill be doing the clips, I have 2 more cars of clips to do too. I will be happy to do yours Bob, but I need to be certain of the colors that I buy. Im slightly color blind and would need some duplicolor numbers. Doing by sight for me is dangerous.. I think I remember Bill mentioning that some of the aftermarket clips were wrong shade, etc, so I would like to get it right..

At least you don't have to do the heater core, I did that for you already. :-)

Yeah, if not for that this job would be best left for professionals. Don't forget the engine build. Your kids did a great job at that - the engine runs so smoothly and always starts with one twist. However, I would like to know who put the battery tray bolts in backwards. It probably took 30 minutes to get it out because the J-nuts were on the tray and bolts were going front to back.

Bruce - I'll noodle around on the clip paint. I can't believe there isn't someone that can chime in at least with rattle can recommendations.
