no, the 301 air cleaner base doesnt have as much of a drop to the base as the 400 t/a bases. & i think the scoop is different too. also if youre using a 79 or older q-jet for the 400 the 301's base has a different carb opening style. best to try & locate a mid 70's or 78-79 t/a 400/455 air cleaner base & shaker scoop.

79 301 shaker MAY work on a 400....but 80-81 301 used a smaller diameter A/F housing...

You will need a 400 filter housing regardless..

There might be a height problem. Since the 301 engine is shorter than a 400, I think the 301 air cleaner and shaker setup is taller so it'll reach up through the hole in the hood. So, I think it would sit too high on a 400 and hit the hood. That's just my guess about what would happen. But, I know the air cleaner and metal adapter plate on the shaker are different between a 301 and 400.

Here's an old thread that shows pics of the different air cleaners and shakers so you'll know what to look for:

ok thanks... but what about all the other 400 engine codes for t/a's? WC, X7, PWH, etc etc. just never heard of a 73-79 400/455 t/a air cleaners refered to by engine codes. any 400/455 t/a air cleaner will work for what 79bluebird is needing.

I'll let "experts chime in" and "correct info" by just adding that the WC, X7, PWH will work*...difference is the intake air pipe is wide oval shaped (large diameter) on the '78 & '79 High Performance W72 400's w the "standard power" L78 400's factory equipped w "smaller diameter" round intake w same base....

* Your results may vary.

Potato....

BUT 78-79 W72 base blowby pipe (to valve cover) is indexed at 9 o'clock instead of 7:30 ish....as the 73-76's are

Also 75-79's have an extra sensor in the bottom of base..

.... yes the W72 bases have a wide oval snorkel just like all the older 73-76 t/a bases have... the smaller round snorkel t/a bases didnt happen untill 77 or 78 for the non W72 engines.... all the 73-79 400/455 t/a bases will work for what the OP is asking about, aside from details like blow by pipe locations & # of sensors on the bottom.

But the round hole is almost the same size on the W72 and 180 HP motors.

do you mean the snorkel hole or openings? the wide oval W72 snorkel is way bigger than the round hole 180hp base opening. the 180hp round hole is 4" OD to fit the tube, but the actual opening in the snorkel is like 3" or smaller. big difference between the wide oval & round snorkels.

& the wallet needs to be open a bit wider too... Not that easy to find these anymore.
Even though almost every 78 T/A had them.... ok, I won't start....

I'm not a fan, but I've seen the snorkels removed totally. So all the air is from the shaker, a buddy with a stout 455 in an 80 T/A did this. We go to Cars and Coffee up on Woodward, lol,
