Tire slippage noise from the 1971 455? ;-)
Video present for y'all. I just got the new MaxPerformance 2-1/2" ram air manifolds installed, along with the Pypes crossflow system on Gramma's car. (Me and the boy recently installed a 1971 455 shortblock under the old 350's 6x-4 heads).

Wow! You may want to aim that thing away from the house next time. I love the equally loud brake screech. You seemed a little surprised. Amazing performance with those heads.

Yeah, it seems to be a hellacious engine combination.
As Gramma was fond of saying: "It's a peppy, little car". And that was when it had a 150 horse, 350 2 bbl. I can just picture her grinning ear-to-ear now, about her car's new extra peppyfulness. (Though she would have scolded me for making too much noise with her car) :-) |

LOL, It was her great-grandson taking the video. He helped assemble the 455 (and the 350 four years ago).

That exhaust sounds great. Bring that thing across the Delaware into my shop. I'll trouble shoot the tire issue at no cost.

Those wheels are the 17x9 Year One Rallys. I won them in a contest from Year One a couple years ago. The tires are too short, though. They are BFG 275/40x17s. No rubbing at all but there is way too much gap between the top of the tire and the wheelwell. They are 25 inches tall. A 27" tall tire would be much better - that would be a 255/50x17 which is the same height at a GR70x15.

Steve, it sounds like you have found a somewhat overlooked truth..... big dollar parts and round ports are great, but a 400hp / 500tq Poncho 455 can be built with old D Port heads, non roller cam, and just good build technique, cam choice, and decent pistons. Good exhaust to flow it, and what you find is what you should find. 9.5 to 1 on D Ports counteracts to a degree the lower comp 8.5 CR but higher flow round ports. Not a popular thing to say maybe......

I was most surprised at how powerful this combination actually is, once the carb/tuning/exhaust was properly sorted out. Can't say enough about Eric at VintageMusclecarParts. He did an awesome job salvaging a freebie, junk, 1971 455 carb and making it into a screamer. http://www.vintagemusclecarparts.com/
And much thanks to Rocky Rotella and Cliff Ruggles for constant advice during the build. (Rocky also set up the HEI distributor on his machine back when this same HEI was in my old Black 455HO car). |
