Those pictures and races from a different era.
Used to go to a lot of the SCCA races in the 1960's and 1970's. Typically, gate admission was $4. and a pit pass was an additional buck. if you weren't obnoxious with your attitude, and had patience, both drivers and crew chiefs would talk to you about whatever, even help you with car problems. Haven't been since MAR near St. Louis closed. Mr. Newman's auto racing career is quite impressive. His bio on Wikipedia is pretty good. Glad the post office honored him with a stamp. Jon.

Had a chance to meet and talk with Paul Newman at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course about 20 years ago. He acted like "any other racer" and expected to be treated that way. He told me he would be happy to talk about cars and racing, not Hollywood or acting. He was serious about racing, his driving and having the car just right. He was driving a Nissan Prototype Z at this particular race. I was really impressed. You just never know what will happen when you actually meet someone you admire. But I try to make it a point to meet as many as possible.

All of the Datsun/Nissans that Newman drove through his career were built by Bob Sharp Racing. Back when I was a kid we'd occasionally see the Newman- Sharp race cars. Bob Sharp had a Datsun/Nissan dealership on US-7 in Wilton and Ferrari dealership and the race shop on South St. in Danbury. As I teenager I even applied for the job of lot-boy at the Ferrari dealership. For some reason I didn't get the job.
Newman, of course, had a house in CT and his home track was just up the road at Limerock. Got to see him run up there a few times late in his career, driving his Corvette. When he knew his time was getting short, a few weeks before passed he had the track to himself and spent much of the day doing what he loved, lapping the track at speed. This is what the Bob Sharp Racing shop looks like today. The Ferrari dealership was all the way on the right, where Enterprise is now. The race shop was in the middle section. You'd often see the race cars setting out in front of the bays.
