speed warning comes with low fuel...

if theres a low fuel it just probably means someone stuck it in there and probably didnt realize it was a low fuel gauge....or...its a speed warning piece and some one stole the speedo not knowing the low fuel was part of the package..or the speedo failed and they threw what was available in there

fuel gauge will work with no power to the light

if there is a sticker on the gauge it would be what id use to decode which cluster it was originally

the low fuel light is a little black bolt on pod, it has some really thin wires that run to that fuel thingy on the gauges that is a red piece of circuit board and is wound for resistance for the gauge to read ohms....when the resistance get right.( i cant remember which way ) the light comes on..

the pod is like 3/4 by 1 inch and has a round circuit board in it and a bulb

at least thats what i have seen on the early cars...as technology got better the pod went away..

i just found this pic on ebay...its a 71...i thought the pod went away by 69 but guess later...the metal rectangular thing/relay is the buzzer..you wont see the buzzer on an early car..its screwed to the brake hanger and if i remember right its pink and weird green wires..

the low fuel thing is the black plastic thing with the green and red wire...if this is there..its functional..it is in fact what makes the lamp light up..its very similar to what the early cars have...like i said ive had a bunch of 67s...

thinking back...i think 66 or 67 was the first year for speed warning and low fuel in a lemans, not 65..it coincides with the map light mirror thing on the roof rails..pontiac started throwing big car like options on lemans' because they sold well

it would take some research to know when it started..and i really think 67...because it was first avail in a skylark in 67..i have one...not 66...

Mark, this is kind of interesting. The number on the gas gauge is for low fuel warning, 0375. My 67 master parts book says 65 - 67 had speed alert, which would include low fuel warning, and park brake light. If you look close at the back of the speedo, there's a small key hole not on other standard gauges I have. Also this cluster is XS and the others I have are WA. At one time I did have a lens with the hole for the speed alert setting, now I know where it came from. Last picture is from 66 option/accessory catalog.

The low fuel warning lamp and safeguard speed come together as a package on the 1965 year as option 634. However you could NOT get this option with the Rally instrument cluster.
