Default 68 400 engine timing case bolts vs studs

Well I learn something new every day. I'm doing the final assembly on my 68 400 engine. I went to put the timing case back on and noticed that I had 3 studs and 3 bolts for the case. It seemed odd to me, so I went out to the man cave and looked at my spare 68 400 engine. It had two studs on top of the case and 4 bolts below the water pump. It looks like the case has also been off of that one, so it could easily be wrong.

So, can anyone tell me what is factory correct on a 68 400 engine for timing case fasteners? How many studs and in which timing case holes do they go? I'm assuming then the rest are bolts with washers.

Thanks
OJ

The 2 holes below the water pump are for the studs.
Then 2 bolts at the bottom and 2 at top.

Thanks! Does the top bolt with the engine lifting hook get a washer?

There are 2 studs on the LH side for manual steering cars alternator bracket. There is 1 stud of the RH upper for the the loop for an engine hoist hook.

Okay so his is really interesting. I posted this question also in the Firebird section. Same question. The conclusion was that there were two studs, both on top on 68 engines that had the timing case with the 8 bolt water pump. Is it really possible that some engines had 3 studs in the positions you suggest? I do have 3 studs that were removed from my engine long ago, but I was thinking that soneone else may have replaced a bolt with a stud. Do you have any pictures of an original engine with the studs in these positions?

Thanks for the input

If you look in the 68 service manual there are several pictures of 68 blocks with the two long studs installed at the top above the two main water passage in the front of the blocks.

Don't think I've ever seen one with three long studs ... but anything is possible from work done by previous hands over the years.

I know this is either a 66 or 67 cover, but the studs are in the same place for a 68 cover as well.
