...short story of the "Barn Judge"

...spring of 1969,

...I was 17 years old with a new Verdoro Green '68 GTO convertible, 400 4-spd...on our cruise strip late one night this orange GTO pulls up behind me wanting to race...I could see the parking lights and knew it was a '69 GTO, but the color had me puzzled...cross traffic light turns yellow and this orange GTO leaps up beside me, driver gives me the nod, light turns green and he is gone, I was executed by "The Judge"...next day at school I spent the morning in the library going thru all the magazines learning what a Judge was

...flash forward...I never saw that Judge on the street again, I soon left to work for a company in Indy, then for Uncle Sam and when I returned in 1974, gas was 50 cents a gallon and all the street warriors had turned into 4 cyl grocery getters...sad times for sure...I heard over the decades this particular Judge still existed, original owner still had it etc, but never could make a connection...a few years ago I was having breakfast with a buddy and some older ladies were sitting behind me, conversation led to one of them owning a "1969 GTO JUDGE", real long story short, she owned the very same car I had raced 40 years earlier, she had bought it new at Wells Pontiac in Richmond Indiana, it was her car, people were bugging her to buy it, offering peanuts...I stepped up and paid her a good price for the car, we were both happy and after sitting in a single car garage for 37 years from 1972 until 2009 (6 blocks from my house) we rolled her out, some minor tuning etc and a few days later it was purring like a kitten...the next week my 2 1969 Carousel Red GTO Judges were at a magazine photo shoot, it has been in a couple of magazines and a Barn Find book...there is a whole lot more story, I'm just too lazy to type it all

...coming out of the garage for the first time in decades, loaded up for a quick trip across town to a friends resto shop to get her running...the original owner posing one last time with the car...she drove the car as a daily commuter until gas reached 50 cents a gallon, parked it and bought a 6cyl Duster and the Judge was never out again...42K original miles

...a quick wash with a broom, a little minor detailing and it is returned to it's new home...a couple of weeks later it was at a magazine photo shoot...

...stored in a small garage with other stuff for 37 years, it has a couple of small scratches, no rust and the interior is like new...we did replace the cracked windshield...the gasoline was still like new in the tank, they used it for their lawn tractor that summer, LOL

...this is the 1968 GTO I raced against the Judge in March 1969

...the magazine that started my obsession with the new 1968 GTO, I still have the magazine, I carried it to school for months and looked at it every day, January 1968 I ordered a new 68 GTO conv...me standing next to my 1968 GTO conv when it was just a few days old, and I was 17

...the original 68 GTO was destroyed in 1969 by the next owner(I had traded for a new Chevelle SS 396/375 4-spd triple black convertible) , torn in half under a bridge...about 10 years ago I found a 99.99% twin to my original GTO...still have it

...pix 3 is the "new" 68 GTO I purchased to replace my old original one...

...me with the original lady owner

...sorry to post so many shots, but this was a true Barn Find"...to find this car after 40 years, close to my house, for sale...it was a very unusual story, at least for me...we took hundreds of pictures to document the day and I have posted way too many of them LOL

...to date, the car has logged only 20 miles from the day I bought it, it still wears all original paint and interior...matching numbers PHS etc...a real true survivor Muscle Car...my opinion, it should never be restored, but kept as the time capsule it is...hard to find a 47 year old Judge that has been off the streets since 1972

...ps...the car was plated in 1974, taken out for a new exhaust system and new tires, the exhaust still has the stickers and the tires have less than 30 miles on them in 42 years, it was driven straight back to the garage and never saw daylight again until 2009

Totally agree, never restore that Judge. Plus I don't mind all the posted photos at all. Love to see the original cars as they were built.

As a side note I picked up a 69 Judge original drivetrain, been off the road since 1972 also. Not quite as nice as yours however.

Wow, what an awesome barn find 69 Daytona!

Let me know if you'd like a correct window sticker for that Judge, or your other cars.

This 1969 Judge RAIV was the MCACN show, and is now in the Pontiac-Oakland Museum. The engine and frame are perfectly restored, the body is a disaster.

Are they PHS window stickers, or originals?

The ones I do closely match original window stickers, not PHS versions. If you have originals, I would love to add them to my collection!

The Judge was engineless for quite sometime.....would have stomped the 'bee. I spent more time than I'll admit sitting in that Judge looking "cool" sans engine and making engine sounds!! Lol

It's all math related....I was 16 (or 15??), 4:33 gears, 4 speed, and a GTO glovebox holds 4 Rainiers....as I remember there was a HUGE burnout in the mall parking lot (town of 3000 people) followed by blue lights.....that kind of set a trend for the next 10 years ....lol. Poor cop probably spilled his coffee. I'm so glad I never had kids!!!

I just thought of something.....I also had quite a relationship with the robed version of several judges for years......hmmmm...
The irony.
