Dad's 1963 Starchief. The night of our Senior Banquet I blew off the local rich kid with his new 1964 V8 Cutlass 4spd. He was not happy.

A 64'ish Impala ...the big flat one, ragtop, white with red interior, those two big antennas on the back at an angle.
A mid 60s Chevy truck ... we all used to climb in the back and go get ice cream. 66 Tempest 2dr, 326 ..in some light aqua color. 69 Firebird, OHC Six, with the four barrel, four speed, and a 4'something ratio rear, Verdora Green |

Except for the 66 Dodge Coronet 500 383 4-bl, I talked him into buying as our family car, I liked his Silver Continental Mark V.
I think it was a '77 or '78. It had a 460 engine and a disc brake 9" rear end. Lotta hot rodders sought out those parts when these cars hit the junkyards. He also had a '58 Merc that was pretty cool. It had a V8 and push button drive. If I remember correctly, 2nd gear was called "Hill Control". I got a good bit of seat time in it. Last edited by ponyakr; 01-26-2016 at 11:25 AM. |

66 Baracuda, had that big fishbowl rear glass and a flood down rear seat. Going on any long trip, that area was perfect for 3 children to lay down in and look up at the sky.

My dad never had any cool cars that I remember. He was always too practical. He bought Ramblers and Dodges. It wasn't until I was a teenager that he finally bought a couple of Pontiacs. A 69 Catalina and the only new one I remember, because I coaxed him into ordering it was a 1973 Lemans Sport Coupe. It was ok but still pretty basic. That's why now I'm buying the cars that I wanted him to buy. Like my 1969 GP and '70 Bonneville convertible

Most of the cars my Dad had were company cars, so none of them were "cool". The family car was a 64 Impala Wagon with the 283 a 2sp and manual everything. That was the car that I learned on. Other cars were a 63 Falcon, 74 4dr Comet, 72 Fury with a 440 4bbl. Those are the ones I remember the most.
Most others he only had a year or so. All 4dr plain jane cars.

The joys of learning on a manual car.
Yep, learned on a 326 Tempest auto, power nothing, absolutely nothing. I'm amazed it didn't have a crank in the front to start it. |

My favorite car that my dad owned was his '67 GTO, which is now mine.

1965 Barracuda Formula S. Had it totally restored in the early 80's. Unfortunately a rather large Oak tree fell on top of it-total loss in the mid 90's.

My parents never threw out any old paperwork. My brother was recently going through some boxes and came across the purchase documents for the 1932 Ford Tudor V8 my dad bought in the middle 1930s - a long before I was born, but it would have been a neat car to have today. Of course, at the time it was just a cheap used car.

It must have been fun growing up in a family with a "car guy" for a dad.
The only cool car my dad had was the '50 Merc Club Coupe that he bought as a demonstrator in '51. It was the closest thing to a brand new car he ever owned. By the time it was handed down to me on my 16th birthday (in '65), it was very well used. It didn't make it through that summer. Every car he bought after that was a large 4 door Ford or Mercury with few options. I thank my uncle for turning me into a car guy. He had a good job, no kids and bought a new car every other year. He had some very nice Pontiacs and Chevys

More than his cars, I most enjoyed using my dad's '53 Ford stake-rack truck (2 or 3 ton?). Original flathead V8, 4-speed box & 2-speed rear. "50th Anniversary Ford" on the horn button. Early on, he had put J.C.Whitney tubing headers on it with no mufflers- just straight stacks up the rear of the cab! He kept it up through about '69, shortly after I married.
When I was first going to school (1945 to ~1949) I got a kick out of sometimes riding to school on the back of his Indian motorcycle, if he was heading into the village in the morning.

Fortunately or unfortunately, my Father always drove company cars and usually picked a station wagon for most of the 80's or 90's. He did have a Camaro LT for a while in the 70's and then a Grand Am & Grand Prix in the last 10 years or so.
Nothing terribly memorable, but he always loved what I had.

Dad always had a Ford pickup and mom a Country Squire station wagon.
While neither was teenager material, both had their advantages to a young driver that dated and socialized a good bit.
