HD Alternator?
My 69 GTO was ordered new with HD Alternator. PHS reads "ALTER - S/R - 55". Is this an externally or internally regulated alternator? How does this differ from the standard alternator these cars came with? The car no longer has the original alternator (now has an internally regulated alternator with a hacked up wiring harness), and I'd like to replace it with the correct one. Thanks, Will

Should be 1100700. Not too hard to find, in fact, I have one that i think i grabbed from a 69. Would have to check the date code.

S/R is self-regulated (internal regulator), which is not the '700 alternator.

Ahh, missed the s/r. What is the number for this alternator, then?

AFAIK, 1100830.

I think it is the 1100830 alternator.
The other one may be the service replacement? Some of the info I have shows 55 amp and others 61 amp.

Thank you for the replies Held For Ransom, 68bird400HO, and johnta1! The alternator I pulled from the car is stamped 1100830 / 55A / 12V NEG / 8G22 which I presume is July 22, 1968. I think it may very well be the original unit as this is about three months ahead of my car's build date. Unfortunately, it tested bad at the local auto parts store. Is anyone aware of a reputable rebuilder from this board or elsewhere?

They're not that hard to repair if it's the diodes, etc.
If it's the stator and whatever, maybe not. There was a place on the net that sold kits to rebuild them. (pretty cheap really) Did the place say what was wrong?

johnta1, I had it tested again and it passed... They said the volts were at the high end (15.4) of the acceptable range. I think I'm going to put it on the shelf for now and run a rebuilt unit which they also tested - the volts for that one were lower (14.8). Thanks again for your response.

Those self regulating alternators are very rare, out of my over 700 69 PHS's only 2 had the option. I believe there were problems with them and during 68 and 69 model years there were periods when they were not available.
