Question Building a new PC for my desk at work . . .

and I'm looking opinions concerning storage.

My system MUST be rock-solid reliable, and needs to last a while. My current desktop is over 6 years old!

My question is: should I consider going with a solid-sate drive, or stay with a traditional HDD. Also, what brand(s) of solid-state drives have proven the most reliable.

FWIW - I'll be installing Win 7 Pro 64-bit as my OS.

Thanks!

without question SSD, it will transform your experience. The best SATA flash drives are currently returning figures around 100,000 IOPS.

Thanks, Jim.

What's your opinion of the 1TB Samsung 850 EVO-Series drive?

Thanks again.

I've got two 500 gig 850 evo's in my machine. Flawless so far ... they are not the best out there, but they seem reliable and good bang for the buck.

I still keep a 500gig conventional drive to back up my SSD boot drive now and then.

But yeah .... you'll never go back once you start using SSD.

I appreciate your input, and your advice brings up another question - which SSD's ARE the best out there, in your opinion?

Oh, and I already back up my current desktop to a 1 TB WD USB external HDD on a regular basis. Great advice!

Thanks once again.

I am in complete agreement with others, SSD is the future and it is here now. A site I respect as an ex IT analyst, says good things about the Samsung products as well as SanDisk. SanDisk was one of the pioneers of solid state memory so they have a lot of cred in my opinion.

I use an ssd for the OS and programs often used and a hdd for archive stuff. In this case a WD green 1 tb but if your serious you could use a WD red NAS disk for storage. As usual you should also backup whatever thru a NAS or a portable harddrive stored at other location.

You say it needs to be rock-solid reliable. Then at the very least you should have 2 mirrored drives for when one fails, but more drives and higher level of RAID would be better. If you have the money, splurge on a Drobo and never worry.
