Aftermarket starters?
Is anyone running a decent cheap aftermarket starter? Same as a 389 starter or different?

Ames carries Hi Torque starters for all early Tempest applications, page 24.
My friend installed one on his 4 cylinder and he loves it, spins it a lot faster than the stock starter, which is what he wanted. He has a low compression motor. Gary |

Good find! Pricy though but you get what you pay for I guess. I'll see if my poor old starter will turn my rebuilt engine with the higher compression before i spend the money

You may try having a rebuilder rebuild yours with high torque fields.

I refer to it quite often and have helped management at Ames with each edition, including finding sources for parts. They don't have all the hard to find parts, but they do have a lot. Unfortunately the demand on some parts are not enough to justify the financial investment needed to reproduce, but sometimes they make the investment. Some of their parts ship directly from the factory so you might just contact the manufacturer directly and save. Gary |

Powermaster, no issues. Highly recommend a heat shield no matter what you choose.
